I have a 86 Caprice wagon. I wanted to know how hard would it be to convert from a gas engine to a diesel and what do I need to convert it over?

Right now I have a factory Olds 307 with 200 4 R trans with a 3.08 rear.

Is the 6.2 diesel that GM put in their light duty trucks? Or is it a early Duramax? Never mind I just answered my own questions.

6.2, which was the precursor to the 6.5 engine.

The Duramax is an entirely different animal.

Is this a direct bolt in or is the a few mods that I will have to do?

Definitely a "make it work as you have to" project. Even transplanting a diesel into a vehicle that had the diesel as an option takes a certain amount of work. Transplanting it into a vehicle that never had it as an option requires a certain amount of customization to make it work.

You have a certain advantage in that the 6.2/6.5 has certain similarities to the GM gasser engines when it comes to bolt patterns and such - just because the trucks and Suburbans/Blazers came with both gas and diesel engines.

6.2 was mechanical injection. Early 6.5s were mechanical, but then went to electronic with an ECM. Chances are you aren't going to find a crate 6.2 as they haven't been used since '92.

Penninsular Diesel offers crate 6.5s: http://www.peninsularengine.com/index.html

Since you are converting a vehicle that didn't have a diesel to start with, the best course of action would be to buy a complete donor vehicle so that you can get all the associated parts. Otherwise you're going to be buying every little item separately.
