hello everybody. Rather than trying to do the motor mount myself, I got an estimate for replacing the passenger side engine mount on my 6.5 turbo diesel K2500 Suburban. They quote $600 plus in labor alone.:eek:
Seems like I might be doing it myself, but is it really a six hour job by a professional? I can't imagine how long it will take an amateur hack like myself!
Any help/thoughts greatly appreciated.
Ouch! Considering that the mounts themselves are about $10 apiece, that's a lot of labor!
Replacing mine is on my list of things to do. I haven't tackled them on a 6.5, but from doing others I cannot imagine that there is nearly a full day's worth of work to do them.
And I'd really do both of them at the same time. By the time you've gone to the trouble, you might as well do both - and I can't imagine that the driver's side is in any better shape.
In 6 hours, the entire engine can be removed and replaced. Engine mounts should be less than one hour in a typically equipped shop (both sides, including the required union break). There's nothing special or complicated with the 6.5L mounts. Same as just about every other V8 powered light truck on the planet. That estimate seems extreme, even for a dealership.
Go for the "2nd opinion". Get another quote, somewhere else.

Thanks for the input guys! Unfortunately, the 2nd opinion was $780 for both mounts! These are both independent shops, one I have used for years, so I don't think there's some sort of scam going on . . .
That's pretty crazy. As I say, I haven't specifically done a 6.5, but it is basically just unbolting the mount, jacking the engine enough to slide it out, putting the new one in, lowering it, and tightening the bolt.

Fairly simple job in a pain in the a$$ spot.
Do it yourself over a weekend,and it will be like paying yourself $600-$700 dollars to learn how to work on your truck.I did the ones on my 98 K3500 and it was a pain,but simple.I went with polyurethane replacements.Mine were so bad in that in reverse the motor would lift about 1 1/2" when you torqued on it.

FWIW....... just looked up a pair of new mounts for my truck, a 1986 K30 in polyurethane less than $31.00 each.
It can not take 8 hour to chance the mounts.
And you pay yourself $700.00 :D

Are you sure the mount is even bad?
Well, I'm trying to get it thru Maryland inspection, and that's what the inspector tells me.
My real problem at the moment is I have done so much other work, new injector pump, new heads, new bunch of stuff on the front end, new bumper, injectors, glow plugs, I just want the thing done ! Figured it would cost a reasonable amount and I wouldn't have to worry about it. Oh well.
The inspection station failed it because it needs a motor mount? I thought New Jersey had all the so called inspectors that let there authority go to there heads!
In Maryland you only are inspected once, when you first register a car, rather than annually, and it covers everything. I also needed to replace the bumper (rusted thru in a spot) several front end components, brake parts, door hinge pins (wouldn't latch smoothly) and more. At least I know its safe, (for the moment)!

I bought the mounts for my motorhome from NAPA, the local shop replaced both for ~$75; since my coach is a diesel pusher, the mounts are easily accessible...but I can't fathom $700 for the job on your truck.
I had the pan removed/re-installed, both mounts removed/replaced and the oil lines replaced for $600. That was at a shop that had me at their mercy and did not know me....
