    Default Airbox on LLY

    I have a 2005 with the LLY engine. Seems I remember reading that changing out the stock air intake box improves/lowers engine operating temperature somehow, especially towing. Am I remembering correctly and what does one replace it with?

    There is marked improvement upgrading to the 2006+ filtration/ducting system. Some modification is required.

    Default airbox 05 d-max

    I had mine replaced on my late 05 GMC and it made a nice difference, not only in cooling but, in better fuel economy. GM took care of the cost under a service bulletin. Search this site .. I know there is plenty of info available. Take your Max to your dealer they can research it for you... IF you have a dealer looking out for the customer.

    Can't say mine runs hot. Did see it go above 210 once for a short period pulling a long incline. Do notice fan kicks in a lot when towing in hot weather and tranny temps get up to 195 pretty easily. Does that meet the bulletin criteria to get GM to replace airbox? By the way, I've got about 85K miles. I assume this might be covered un der the 100K warranty?

    The document doesn't really say if it is covered under the 5 year/ 100k mile warranty. I would assume so. There are several checks that have to be made before performing the repair. Send me your personal e-mail in a private message and I will send the document to you.

    Guys, my dealership said the airbox replacement (bulletin # 06-06-036D) is only covered by the 36K bumper to bumper warranty, not the 100K diesel engine warranty. I've got about 86K miles on truck. Called GM customer assistance and they couldn't even find the bulletin and referred me back to the dealer with no answer. Does anyone know the correct answer?

    JohnnyR, I think the 3-36 is correct, @ least my dealer used that as to why GM would not do the update.
    So I did the update. I now have less smoke, I use and edge and boost stick so some smoke on brisk accel happened but not now with the larger intake.
    However my question was do I need the reflash, I have not yet done the reflash, and was told by one on this forum that maybe would not need it. I am still watching mileage and power to decide if I try the reflash.
    I hope that it does help temp because I do pull heavy and have had temp issues. A larger Allison spec cooler under the truck helped keep trans temps @ 210max on hard hot pulls but engine temp may still be an issue.

    I do not know how many $$. I would have to add it up, but will not be to the shop untill sometime next week.
    I do know a couple of parts are no longer available. One in particular is the mount for the new air box, it lays in position nicely w/out the bracket.
    The install is not too bad, GM bulletin says about 2 hour install, I took a little longer with interruptions and the diagrams are not the best. If you do some of your own work this should be doable. bob.............................................

    Pulled trailer today, only 37 miles, no black smoke. power ok.

    Well, I did not price the parts first.................... just ordered and installed!!........................

    Part # 19167951 cleaner, (the air box w/ filter) was $411.74/ list $498.47, WOW!!!
    I would have looked in the salvage yards untill I found a good one if possible!
    Plus the other parts and I am not looking up the invoices to let you know the others prices because I do NOT want to be shocked any further. Thanks guys. bob...................

    Just made a 518 mile trip pulling 23500# gross to southern Ky. and back. Much better mileage than I have ever observed, 11.1 mpg. Ran 70-72 going down in the rain almost all the way, ran 72-75 back north and pulled a few hills on the floor with a friends 6.0 Furd. He was running a lot lighter 5 quads, 5 people, on an open tandem axle single wheel gooseneck vs my enclosed tri-axle, 5 quads and 5 people. He could take me but he was pouring the smoke mine was near smoke free, level one Edge.

    The 06 air filter and intake does let it breath easier, power was more responsive, accel pedal livelier, felt like the power was easier to achieve and mileage was there even fooling around on the first 7-8 hills with the 6.0.
    If the half mile the gallon improvement holds the air box update will be paid for in around 40000 miles.

    Default LLY Airbox Replacement

    Need suggestions. I called Mother GM again, they gave me a case #, and said have the dealer verify the issue. Went to dealer and asked how they would verify 2005 LLY runs real warm when towing heavy uphill and they could not say. Asked if the ECU (computer) would retain highest temps attained and they said no. I live just SE of Houston where it's flatter than a pancake so it's going to be impossible to replicate the problem here especially w/summer over. Does anyone know how I can convince them it has a problem short of giving them my truck to see if they can make it run hot? I'm not real comfortable with that scenario.

    The conditions can be simulated. Check around your area for a shop with a load-cell dyno. This can simulate any load on a drivetrain (within its capacity). Have the dealer issue/install a snap-shot monitor, which will allow you to freeze-frame the PCM during the tests. All you'd need then, is the dyno report to verify the conditions, and a dealer willing to cooperate, of course. Some dealer shops will even have a tech observe the test, once it's set up. You may even get a tech to work "off the clock" to observe the test. It all depends on how willing the dealership and the tech(s) are to see to their customer satisfaction. Good luck!
