    Angry Help! 6.5 Turbo Diesel problems.

    Help! Could anyone please help me to diagnose the problems I am having with my 1998 Silverado K1500 with 6.5 TD.
    The vehicle always start and begins to run fine when clod, but after a minute or two things being to go wrong.
    The engine apears to overfuel and miss as large amounts of blue/white and sometimes black smoke appears from the exhaust. The engine will clear and run fine over approx 2000 RPM however under that the problems re-appear. It also at times stalls when hot and refuses to idle at all. I am trying to locate someone around here who can download the trouble codes but no luck as yet. Has anyone experienced similal problems and if so could you please offer any advice.

    Check over what I posted.Does the SES light come on,stay on?
    Not being able to read codes it can be hard to tell. There are some code scanner you can get just for reading codes. Internet search can help.
    There has to be a shop in your area that should have a TechII scanner that can pull codes then look at this table.

    My first guess would be the PMD(pump mounted driver) Black box on driver side injection pump.

    I suspect you have EGR on that beast. You can try pulling the vacuum line off the EGR valve in the center of the intake manifold. Plug the line and see if there's any difference. It'll probably set the SES light, but it'll get you pointed in the right direction.

    Also, when the run like you describe, they can plug the converter in short order, which causes other issues.

    Nobody asked if there are any CODES? Autozone and Advance Auto will read them for free where I live. Give us some codes and there are lots of people here that can give you some very good ideas on what to check.

    The beast does have an EGR valve and I have tried removing the vacum line with no success.
    The Service Engine light is also on so hopefully there may be some codes.
    I have found a dealer that may be able to read the codes, vehicle is booked in for tomorrow.
    Could you please expand on plug the converter? never heard of the terminology.
    I'll keep you posted on whether there are any codes.

    Default "Converter" expanded

    The " Converter" is the diesel equilivent of a catalytic converter used on gasoline fueled cars. Diesels version is more of a soot trap. Look under the truck and see if you have 2 mufflers. The smaller, toward the bonnet, is the soot trap. The internal material matrix traps the soot, and it burns off slowly. What we have seen is that the soot builds up faster that it can be burned off. This creates a restriction in the exhaust system that reduces performance. The white smoke after startup is typical of cold cylinder temperatures. The cylinder and/or the glowplugs are not hot enough to get the fuel properly combusted. Glow plugs would be the first thought here. You might try letting the Glowplug light cycle an extra time before starting.

    Let us know what codes were found.

    Thanks everyone for your help to date.
    The fuel filter has been changed and there appeared to be no problem with the lift pump when I bleed the air from the filter housing.
    I will post the codes as soon as I can have them read.
    Also the vehicle had a new Blue label IP fitted about 8 months ago before I puchased it, and they have remotely mounted the FSD to a piece of 3 mm steel plate near the AC compressor.
    This vehicle was running fine prior to this problem occurring overnight and was returning 7.5 Kms per Litre on the highway.
    Look forward to hearing from you guys again.

    I don't like the sound of where and what your FSD is mounted on. Take a look at some of the Kits and heatsinks available and compare. You might want to wait for more appropriate advice but sometimes the stainless steel screws on the FSD loose contact. You might try removing the FSD from the sttel plate and carefully removing the caps off of the two T03 case transistors. Then very carefully loosen and tighten the 4 screws - Not too tight!(2 for each transistor.) Then use some heatsink compund or pad and remount.

    After reading all about FSD relocation and another alternative unit, I still believe the FSD to be the way to go and the best place is on the side of the IP where the manufacturer intended it to go.

    The problem is that most time the damage occurs after the engine is switched off when the heat builds up in the engine bay. Whilst the engine is running the fuel running through the IP keeps the FSD cool but after the engine stops the heat build up can cause damage. For this reason I can't see a benefit to the Repositioning of the FSD to a Heatsink in the Enginebay except for the ease of replacement when it too fails.

    I haven't seen your installation, but I'm not sure I would put a steel plate in the same class as a heatsink.

    For the vehicle to have been running fine when you switched it off tends to lead me to think the FSD is worth a thought!

    Unhappy Help 6.5 TD Update

    Hi everyone.
    Well its not good news but I have managed to get some codes from a dealer although they have little or no knowlege of the vehicle and were hesitant to reveal the codes, here they are:
    P0216 Injection Timing Control Circuit
    P1214 Injection Pump Timing Offset
    Does this in anyway point to the FSD or something else?
    Also asked about checking the TDC Offset and the guy was clearly out of his depth.
    Oh he also said that the Injection timing was 0.0 when in on mode and 6.8 when in off mode ???
    Advice given was anything from a new IP to a new PCM (computer) they just don't know.
    Vehicle appears to run fine for a minute or two when it is cold but then massively overfuels at low revs, however seems to run normally over 2000 RPM.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Have a search of the forum for "P1214". There are some recent similar posts that may help. Would be a good Idea to get Actual readings before making any adjustments. eg Top Dead Centre Desired, Top Dead Centre Actual, and Top Dead Centre Offset. Remember to score a mark on the pump and timing cover so you can reverse any adjustments.

    If you are technically minded you may want to purchase your own Scanner, I recently purchased a cable from the states to interface OBD II socket with a laptop. Didn't break the bank either!

    Would love to have my own Tech II Scanner or similar that could check Injector pump timing and TDC Offset.
    Can anyone suggest where to enquire and how much?

    I did some research on several different ones and settled on Carcode. It interfaces the car to a laptop computer. Cost approx $200 AUD with a RS232 to USB adaptor, and software download. Can View Timing and TDC offset. Can Command TDC Offset learn and numerous other helpful things. (2-10 days delivery with Global Priority) got mine in about 9 days. It has Enhanced GM data and commands.

    Thanks Noel, could you give me some more information on who to contact in relation to the Carcode.
    Sounds like I will be able to set my own TDC Offset learn with this one.
    Do you need to order software separatley?
