I just called the local Racor dealer (he also installed my Banks Stinger Kit) and he thinks it's OEM only, but is calling Racor to find out for sure. I'll post when he calls me back. And, I hope he can get it cheaper than $410.

The kit they have is a copy of mine only with a water probe. It is not available yet but I will have mine ready I hope in a few days.

Thanks Jeephauler for the link. My 04 will be ready soon and I sure don't want the problems I had with my 01 and injectors!! The site now says they are only taking orders but should be ready to ship the first part of Feb.

I see that Racor is rating their filter to 10micron 98% efficiency.
Would it not make sense for them to offer a tighter OEM replacement filter for the factory fuel filter position?
Does anyone know the efficiency of the standard stock filter? Is the Racor stock replacement more efficient than the GM part?

I heard back from the local installer. He said that it's gonna cost $410 and Racor couldn't give him any info on the filter guard other than they have one...doh! I guess I'll wait and see what Greg comes up with.

The following is a quote from one of the early TDP forum discussions on Fuel Filters.
(from page 7 of Fuel Test Results)
"1. All DMAX filters are made by Racor. Period.
2. All DMAX filters have Aquabloc media rated at four (4) microns at 98% efficiency or better.
3. DMAX filters exceed Bosch's specs. (We talk to Bosch on this subject) They remove 100% of free water."
However, based on independent Fuel Test Results for the OEM filter alone, the RACOR OEM filter is not as efficient as claimed. It may perform well in a lab environment but test results from at least two fuel samples taken from in-service filters indicate other wise.
See Kennedy's and Mdrag's test results for the OEM filter ALONE and compare them to the pump fuel values (pre-filter) in the Fuel Test Results file. The numbers tell the story…
OEM Only, ISO Codes (2u/5u/15u Target ISO 15/13/10)
JK: 16/14/11
Mdrag: 19/17/10
OEM: % particles >2u passed through OEM ONLY, filtered output compared to unfiltered pump fuel input
JK: 56%
Mdrag: 84%
Also see ISO Contamination Code Table for an explanation of the ISO codes. An SAE study determined that fuel with an ISO Cleanliness Code of 15/13/10 or lower is best for minimal injector wear in a high pressure diesel injection system.

The efficiency numbers I posted above are incorrect… Thanks to Mdrag for catching my mistake.. The numbers above are the percentage of particles that made it through the OEM filter not efficiency…. The efficiency - % of particles removed - for the OEM filter alone are as follows:
OEM Filter Efficiency - OEM ONLY filtered output compared to unfiltered pump fuel input
JK: 44%/62%/74% (>2u/>5u/>15u)
Mdrag: 16%/44%/94% (>2u/>5u/>15u)

On a side-by-side comparison, what are the differences between your filter assembly and the GM-sponsored Racor?
What's the durability of that assembly? I'm a little concerned about putting the filter under the truck exposed to the elements.
I looked on your website and thought I saw the GM/Racor Filter Kit for $285. Is this the new filter?

The only diffence between my kit and Racors is how the lines are attached, thats it. I installed the kit I had a picture of on a 2001 today and we took a lot of pictures and I hope to have instructions posted in a few days. As far as being under the truck I have had a Racor on my 95 in about the same place for over 4 years and never a problem. I use it iff road as well. While installing it today I did look to see what could be added though for those that want it.

I'm a couple clicks away from buying your filter assembly. Two questions: 1)Does the Racor 690 fit comfortably under the truck, or does it come close to hanging below the frame (i.e., should I get the 660)? 2) Are you manufacturing a filter guard that can be added later on?

Yes the 690 would fit on the bracket but it would hang below the frame. IMHO you do not have anything to gain using by using the 690. The filter is 1" longer so you would not get that much more life out of it. Also it has .25 psi pressure drop compared to the 660 at .05 psi drop. So the 660 is less restrictive. As for the rock guard we are going to come out with somethng but IMHO I don't think its needed. I have had this same filter on my my 95 for 5 or so years and its never been a problem.

If this additional Racor filter is rated to 10 microns, is there much point? Isn't the factory filter rated at 10 micons? There may be a difference between filter ratings and actual performance; but it would seem to make sence to use a filter that is rated better. Could one use a Racor filter rated to the 2 micron standard?

I just order the 660 kit from you! Thanks to everyone for the excellent information and help throughout the forum. It's dizzing to read all the posts on the secondary fuel filter issue (pre vs. post, CAT vs. Racor, heated vs. not, etc.). You just have to make your own decision that best fits your needs.
To specifically answer your question DmaxCC6spd, the filter kit that I'm getting from Greg is rated at 2 micron (correct me if I'm wrong Greg). Thanks again.
