low range issue

i have a 2001 2500HD with allison trans and i noticed when in low range it will go into neutral and the gear indicator light on dash flashes
anyone ever seen this or know what could be the problem
i just got the truck and don't want to hurt anything
i'm going to get an appt at the local allison service shop to get it serviced as i don't know if or when it was last serviced but i thought someone might of had a similar problem

If you have the pushbutton control transfer case (NVG-263), you may either have a pushbutton switch problem or encoder/motor problem on the t-case itself. There have been a few switch panel (dash control) problems for a few owners. I had to replace the switch panel in my 2001 because of a flashing LED or no LED, and sometimes a no shift problem.

The switch panel isn't very expensive and is fairly easy to replace. We did a story on switch panel replacement a couple of years ago.

Also, try moving the truck a bit in case the gears stack up. It is sometimes necessary to move and "shuffle" the deck.
