Does anyone know what size the freeze plugs should be that go in the front of the block above the cam? Is 16.2 mm the right size?

Those holes are oil galleries that feed the lifters and run from front to back on both side of the cam. ( Both front and back should be screw in type plugs.
The front ones are recessed to clear the cam gear) The other two holes above the cam are left open for oil drain back from the lifter chamber.

Yes, don't forget those plugs! If you don't plug those oil galley holes now, you won't have any oil pressure when you start the engine up! (Don't ask me how I know!)

My front ones are not pipe plugs. They are just recessed holes. I bought 16.2mm freeze plugs that fit tightly so I will just use those. I just wanted to know if they were the right size.

Yeah, they're just the drive-in style plugs. That's what makes them easy to forget. Without those plugs in place, the oil gets pumped up from the pan, through the camshaft galley, and then dumps out the front of the block back into the pan.

Hmm, I can't recall the size, have to go look through the photo gallery and see...
All 6.2's and most 6.5's use the press-in plugs in this area.
The later 141 and 506 casting 6.5's have the pipe plugs (better idea IMHO).
I see what I can do, I think mine were standard...

The only soft plugs in the back of the block would be the end plug on the cam bore.
The lifter oil galleries have pipe plugs in the back and soft plugs up front untill later 6.5's then screw in plugs.
Explain more about "UNDER THE REAR MAIN"

I think reddog is talking about this thread. I admit I read it the other day and ever since I have been a little paranoid myself. I just rebuilt my engine and I don't remember this plug. Anyone got a picture?

The plug in question is the MAIN GALLEY plug and is driven into a hole in the block under the rear main cap.
I have a bare block sitting in the shop and will get a piccy here in a while and post it up here.
