    Default New GM Diesel?

According to the Auto Show in Geneva, Chevrolet is putting out a new compact SUV with a 4-cyl diesel option. Said only for Europe for now but you never know about in the future. One article I read said it would get 38 MPG with a stick. A few less with automatic.

Anyone else hear about this? Maybe it'll make GM get off their butts and make the 6-cyl D-Max for the Suburban

VM Motori is a part of Daimler-Chrysler. Their 2.8 liter engine powers the Jeep Liberty diesels.

I've been saying for a long, long time that ~40mpg wouldn't be out of reach for a compact pickup/SUV powered by a ~2.5l I4 TD, and with exhaust scrubbers they could almost pass ZEV standards as well. Maybe we'll see my predicted 30mpg, ~4l I5 TD-powered 1/2-ton pickup/SUV before long as well.

Considering that my parents' VW Passat station wagon gets low to mid 40's on the highway, I think a compact pickup/SUV that got in the high 30's would definitely be doable.

I really have to admit that I like driving that Passat! Not going to get you many points at the dragstrip, but it will maintain 85 mph on the Pennsylvania Turnpike through the mountains and everything.

Jeep is suppose to introduce 2 addtional Small SUV's with Diesels. Honda has Diesel CRV's in other countries just not in the North America. (ba$$tards)

Yep, I drool over what Toyota offers just about everywhere but the US in its truck lineup. Just do a search for "70 Series Landcruiser" sometime. They think the only market here is for soccer moms...

GM has their heads up their rear ends as usual. All I see on TV now is the "Flexfuel" technology for '07 with the ability to use E85 gasohol. Great. Where do I get that? How about they wake up and sell the diesels the rest of the world gets. RT

I think there are at least 2 reasons outside GM's (or any other manufacturer's) control that help curtail Diesel sales in the US. First is the stigma that Diesels are smelly, noisy and hard to deal with in the winter. As a former '95 owner and Diesel fan, I must admit that I had no idea how far the technology had advanced until I got this '06. (I was able to start it absolutely no sweat at -5F the other day. The only concession is synthetic oil.) If I don't know about the state of the art, how do you expect the masses to know?

Second is the fuel. When the newest low sulphur fuel is available, the engines that have been tooling around Europe for the last several years can finally grace our shores.

A friend of mine has a tricked out '95 Jetta. He drives 80+ MPH all the time. (He's a German transplant) The thing is a rocket ship and he gets 55 mpg!

    Dredging this up…

Looks like they’re finally moving ahead on the 4-cylinder Duramax. A friend is out at the Chicago Auto Show and they’re showing off a Colorado with the 2.8 Duramax.

I'll believe it when I see it. The Cruze Diesel entered the market with little/no fanfare. The car has no Diesel "pride" badging, except for a tiny 1 x 1.5" green/chrome tag on the trunk lid, with "2.0 TD", in 1/4" lettering. Probably a strategy to quietly slip away, if it failed. Fantastic car, so far.

Looking around, I see that the Duramax won’t be available until 2016 - so you may be right about not holding my breath.

    http://www.topspeed.com/trucks/truck...7646.html#main

For diesel fans, 2016 will bring an all-new 2.8-liter four-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel. Though the official numbers are not out yet, expect the baby Duramax to produce around 200 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque.

Good article. We'll see soon enough, if it's really happening. Tooling for the 2016 models can begin at any time now, if it hasn't already. No later than a few months, in any case. The first Cruze Diesel was a 2014 M/Y, with production beginning January 2013. I'm not in the market for a new (mini) truck just yet, but I'm looking forward to these rolling out, if/when they do. A Blazer with the same powerplant may get a serious look, though.

GM had the diesel Colorado on display at the SAE conference last spring. IIRC they stated they planned to have available for 2016 MY.

How much do you want to bet that this is going to mean that they don’t move ahead with the diesel option for 2016?
