I need to get the number off splines for the 1982 and 1989 700R4 torque converter shaft. I was told the shaft size change in the mid 1980, please help.

1982 Blazer ("Ratau" ROAR OFF THE BIG LION in African Tswana language.) 6.2L N/A, 700R4, 3.08 gears, 33" BF's. DSG timing gears, 12" Donaldson air filter, J intake and dual 2.5" exhaust. The rest stock.
82-84 are 27 spline, 85-up are 30 spline.
1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer...new 6.5 in process...diamond block, 18:1's, other goodies...

Thanks for your reply. The previous owner replaced the original tranny with one out off a 89 gas model and it look like they installed the gas TC as well as the 82 diesel TC did not fit the 89 shaft. If I put my foot on the brake the revs goes up to around 2000 before it stall. A friend gave me a TC so I must count the splines to check if it will fit.
There are two sets of splines inside the TC, which is which?
I made a cable connection housing on top off the vacuum pump shaft to drive a mechanical rev counter and it work.

It should be the splines that are inside. If you look into the converter, you will see an inner set and an outer set - count the inner set.
