Cool

Well, my friends at the Dynomax engineering facility here in Jackson, Michigan needed my truck for their 4" exhaust system measurement and installation. The good news was when they were done, I got to keep the system.

Today was the first day with the system on and all I can say is WOW! Very nice sound and definitely improved performance.

Exhaust specs:

4" down pipe - Stainless
Rest of the system except for the muffler (Stainless) is very thick Aluminized steel. I believe .080 thick.
Oval chrome tip

Now its time to save for the "Juice".

Why not build all of the system from stainless steel?

It is cheaper not to use stainless steel. Aluminized will hold up just fine for most people, unless you drive on salted roads a whole lot.

But the factory system is stainless steel if I remember correctly. For me going to non-stainless steel is a downgrade even though I live in California and will see snow a few weeks a year at most.

I wished someone made a 4 " stainless steel setup.

Bora,
There are a number of SS 4" systems available. Try Banks for regular stainless and Billyboat for high end stuff. Both are MUCH more than alum. steel.

Good luck,

JRiely - I will get the part # and post it soon.

Bora - Charles is right on why the whole thing is not stainless - COST.

I will say that the aluminized pipe that the Dynomax system uses is much thicker than I have ever seen on any exhaust.

I've been hearing that the grade of stainless (409) our exhaust is made out of is very low quality but I did some research that makes me think it's not so bad.....

Do not clean with Steel Wool or a Steel Brush ---> surface rust will result.

....409 (Ferritic) stainless steel alloy is often used for casket manufacturing because it's known for its properties in resisting atmospheric oxidation and high durability in outdoor use.
http://www.funeralplan.com/products/stainless.html

409 type Stainless Steel is specially designed for automotive exhaust systems.
409 type Stainless Steel resists atmospheric and automotive exhaust gas corrosion.
409 type Stainless Steel developes a light surface discoloring which will retard progressive corrosion.
409 type Stainless Steel contains 10.5%...11.75% Chromium

http://www.stebro.net/stwc.htm

Here is a key note!!!!

In recent years, however, and with the upcoming US government requirement for a 100,000 mile exhaust capability, other alloys have been becoming more prevalent.

I convinced myself the 4" exhaust was not needed in the Dmax. I ended up with 4" exhaust installed this past weekend. I was wrong!! 4" exhaust is the way to go!! MOPOWER

wizkid... more exhaust flow = higher decibels in most cases, if not all. And yes it is a LITTLE louder with the Kennedy setup. I would take a stab at saying 10 - 15%??

The system they did for me included the 4" down pipe. The informed me it would be included in the crew cab system.

I will keep everyone informed.

I think some are refering to the first pipe that bolts to the cast pipe with a band clamp as the down pipe while others are refering to the cast pipe that bolts to the turbo as the down pipe. Most kits (actually all of them) DO NOT replace the pipe that bolts to the turbo so..... it would be safe to say they are talking about the first pipe from the band clamp on back.
