Thread: Oil Supplement/Synthic Oil ?????

    Was useing the RED stuff as an additive per your reccomendations ( STP red botttle ). Just went to Rottela Full Sunc.
    Do I need to add the supplement with the sync oil?

    rj - I recall one benefit being the ZDP for flat tappet cams (that's why I'm putting it in the Duster).

    Extra lubricity (sp) added to free flowing oil. Can
    t hurt, can it?

    IF your Rotella synthetic oil is dual labeled (SJ or SK as well as CI-4) it is a Universal Oil and has the sulfur (Zinc dithiophosphate - "thio" is the sulfur part of this compound) limited to avoid catalyst poisoning. All the rubbing parts in your engine can benefit by having a little more Zinc dithiophosphate in the lubricant. I would continue using 1/2 bottle of red STP per oil change.

    Question

    What are the benefits of the "red" additive. I use Rotella 10/40. it sounds like I should use 1/2 bottle per change, true? why?

    STP contains two significant ingredients:
    1) a viscosity index improver, keeps the oil thicker at high temperatures

    2) zinc dithiophosphate, a great oil anti-oxidant and a wonderful wear and friction reducer for iron and steel part (think piston rings on cylinder walls, and gears driving camshafts and injection pumps).

    The first one is bad for diesels, because it tends to make varnish on hot parts, like the underside of pistons, top piston rings in diesels, exhaust valve stems, etc.

    The second one is good for diesels, makes the oil last longer and cuts down wear of many internal engine parts.

    Red STP has less of the viscosity index improver and more of the zinc dithiophosphate, compared to blue-bottle STP.

    FWIW, Power Service Diesel Lube Oil Extender is also a source of ZDP. I'm not a chemist but looking at the MSDS it looks like it may not have the VI improvers (??)... I've seen it a Wal-Mart around here... I've thought about sending in a sample for an Oil Analysis.

    One of the properties of zinc dithiophosphate is that the engine only uses as much as in needs, so excess does not improve anything. And with the red STP, using less means less VI improver to gum up the pistons.

    If the Power Service Lube Extender is indeed free of VI improver, that would be the way to go. But I hate going to the local Wal-Mart - it is always very crowded.

    I sent an email to Power Service asking if their Diesel Lube Oil Extender contained VI Improvers. Their reply is as follows:

    "Diesel Lube Oil Extender does not contain any thickeners to affect the
    Viscosity Improvers of the oil. It will not affect the base of the oil
    either. It only affects the detergent package of the oil. This is why
    our product will not void engine warranties. It does an excellent job of
    dispersing the soot in the oil which reduces sludge formations. It will
    stabilize engine oil, reduce foaming, oxidation and help neutralize
    acids.

    I have attached a spread sheet showing all the tests that it has passed.
    I don't know of another oil additive that has been put through these
    strenuous tests and passed. Most oil additives will thicken the oil.

    (Summary from the spreadsheet:
    Tests: Caterpillar 1K Test, Detroit Diesel 6V92TA Test, Mack T-8 Test, GM 6.2L Test, Mack T-6 Test, Caterpillar 1N Test.

    DL Oil Extender contains zinc which helps fill in or causes a molecular film to form over the cracks and imperfections of the combustion chamber (lower cylinder wall) which prevents cylinder from using oil. DL Oil Extender contains magnesium which is an excellent lube agent)

    Also, Here is a snip from the MSDS that states PS DL oil extender contains ZDDP ...

    PARAFFINIC OIL/50-60

    The composition of this mixture is proprietary information. Specific chemical information is being withheld as a Trade Secret. In the event of a medical emergency, compositional information will be provided to health professionals in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.1200.

    This product is hazardous as defined in 29 CFR1010.1200, based on the following compositional information.

    OSHA HAZARD/COMPONENT
    Eye Irritant/ Zinc salt of dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid (ZDDP)"
