    Default Anybody ever dismantled a 2wd 700R4?

I have an 88 C1500 that started to give a rythmic squeak at low speeds (idling to about 30). It sounded very similar to the sound that worn brakes make but it will only make this noise when there is torque applied, if I let off the gas pedal the squeaking usually stops. Soon thereafter, I started to hear a very pronounced driveline clunk when I would put it in gear or when I would let off the pedal at high speeds. I crawled underneath to check my u-joints and found them to be ok, however my output shaft from the transmission has alot of play in it.

Is there some kind of carrier bearing in the tailshaft that I could replace or does this sound like something else? How tough would the repair be?

    Thanks

I doubt its the output shaft.
My bet is a U joint. Pull the shaft out and check the crosses. I would be willing to gamble one or more are dry and rusty. This condition wont generally show slop but will squeek.
There is a bushing in the tail housing that the drive shaft slip yoke runs in.
Its about 1" long and has an oil groove through it to lube it.
The description rythmic tells me U joint as well as having torque applied.
Check the joints off the truck!
