    Default Tranny Failure

My buddy has a rather unique Diesel rat. It is a 95 ext cab/short box two wheel drive with five bolt axles. I haven't seen very many of these around.
Anyways, his reverse gear in his tranny went out completely. It has always needed a bit more power to get in moving in reverse. When it went, it just dropped completely. He has all his other gears. Is there any thing that can be checked without pulling the tranny?

the 2WD 1500 series had 5 lug wheels and the "S" engine. All 6.5 automatics were 4L80E's.

Early 1500's with the 6.5 N/A had the 4L60E. If the turbo isn't OEM, it could be a possibility. The 60 is a good tranny, but won't stand up the torque of a turbo Diesel (in OEM trim, anyway).

It is a 95 so it isn't that early of a model, and as far as I can tell, it is stock Turbo. The last owner was told that he had the "heavy duty" tranny in it, so I am assuming he meant the 4L80.
