Default Transmission needed 93 Chevy 6.5 PU

I have acquired a 1993 Chevy PU with the 6.5L engine. The transmission SUCKS! Only has 1st gear. Is there more than one tranny and how do I find out?
Can the it be determined by the VIN #?

    Thanks,

    Forbey

It's a 4L80E. Most likely, it only has 2nd gear, not 1st. It should have codes stored. A very common problem is bad power to the trans solenoids caused by faulty trans contacts in the ignition switch.
