    Default has anyone done a 700r to nv4500 swap on a 6.2 k5 4x4?

Just wanna see if anyone has had personal experience with this swap that has some advice
. seems like the local scrapper wants $1000 for a used nv or $2000 for a rebuilt one... figure i can rebuild it myself. just dunno what adapters to get or if i can make my own... feel a little overwhrelmed with this...

Shouldn't be any adapters needed if you get an NV4500 from a GM to start with. The GM bellhousing will bolt right up. Then just a matter of needing the clutch system. The SM465 four speed was the manual that they put behind the 6.2.

Looking at the pictures here: http://www.justchevytrucks.com/truck...smissions.html

The NV4500 is going to be larger, so maybe need some modifications to the trans tunnel? Not sure. I know the NV4500 on my '93 is a pretty tight fit.

You don't mention a year, but the '88-'91 SM465 bellhousing looks pretty similar to the NV4500 bellhousing with a passenger slave and all. The earlier years look to have a mechanical clutch linkage on the driver side. If you have an earlier truck, you may run into some more work to adapt the hydraulics and passenger side slave into your truck.

thanks for the info, my k5 is an 83, and i was looking for an internal slave cylinder style(94+ i believe) nv4500...

heres the reason why, tell me if im wrong

    - external slave cylinder could get damaged offroading (yet easier to fix)

    - ext slave cyl has a 6.** ratio first gear, where as the int slave cyl version has a 5.** first gear

    - im assuming that low first gear is overkill for this truck since it will be daily driven...

Truthfully, I'm not clear on where the division was on the internal slave. RockAuto lists the external slave through 1995. The 6.34:1 granny was in the '93 and '94 models. I also see references to the GM NV4500s starting in '96 having the Dodge bolt pattern - so you'd need a matching bellhousing. I'm guessing the slave change was in '96 with the bolt pattern change.

My '93 has the external slave and the 6.34:1 granny.

I was skeptical about the slave - primarily because the damn thing is plastic. But you scrape the frame rails long before you'd hit the slave with anything. You'd have to hit a perfectly sized rock just right for it to be able to hit the slave without encountering anything else first. This may be different for your '83. I had thought about looking into the internal slave when I first got the truck, but it didn't become an issue so sort of fell off my radar.

The shift knob on mine is labeled L-1-2-3-OD and on the street you're likely to never use low. It is nice for creeping, though - and I've used it a few times pulling things out. Granny low, no accelerator, just let off the brake, and then start slowly pressing the skinny pedal. Pulled out a loaded MDT stuck in mud that several people said was going to need a tractor. I've seen the Dodge knobs labeled 1-2-3-4-5 and assume the later GMs are too. But I somewhat doubt that you're going to start off in first with the 5.61 ratio either, though.

The NP208 transfer case will need a new input shaft. 700R4 = 27 splines NV4500 = 32 splines. Other than the splines the NP208 will bolt up to the 4500 directly.

The internal slave is 96+ GM NV4500's. The ultra-low 1st gear is 1993 only. At $1000 get the bellhousing and used slave with the tranny or just walk away.

When i called my local scrappers they asked if i needed 2wd or 4x4 (im assuming a 2wd wont do me anygood). but they also asked what year truck i needed it from... they said 2500s or 3500s... does that matter? Apparently they have a large inventory but didnt ask about the slave or bellhousing.

2500 & 3500 are no different AFAIK. You need a 4x4 tranny. The tail section is your NP208/241 transfer case adapter. The 2wd version has a different mainshaft and tail section.
