    Cool Diesel conversions

    For truck built on or before '88 there is a conversion kit available from cummins to bolt thier engine right into a Chevy truck. I once called Cummins in Fort Worth and confermed this. My question is could I do this to my 89 c2500? The kit and the work doesn't bother me so much as the state inspection sticker they check for the converter, stove pipe and other such nonsence. I thought of just changeing my underhood sticker to reflect a 6.2 engine from the factory. From there what difference would haveing another diesel in it make? There sure are alot of believers in the 6.5 here so I was wondering what (I can't believe I am asking this) the best model year engine was for the 6.5? Mine, my friends and alot of other people I know were frying pistons in there '92 and '93s. How could this be prevented? Also what about other engines such as the bd1? isuzu. What brought all this up was when I came home a few minutes ago I stepped on the brake and my oil pressure went to 0 kinda started me thinking.

    There is a 90 model ford f350 extended cab dooley running around portales that has a cummins 5.9 in it but I don't know if they got a kit or had the local machine shop fabricate one for them. That would be a cool truck, hope it works. Mason

    When I think of the price of a rebuilt injector pump for a 6.2 or 6.5 mechanical, compared to a PowerStroke or a Cummins 5.9 ($295 vs. $1500+), I quickly realize that I would much rather have the 6.2 and make it as efficient as possible. I can even put a turbo on for the difference.

    I guess I can. The conversion kit I saw from Cummins was a lot of money for motor mounts and a bell housing adapter plus a few other parts. I think the 1989 Dodge/Cummins motor mounts would be the way to go with a little fabrication, then use a trans. that will bolt up with no adapter.

    Over in the "Ask Dr. Lee:" Forum, I had poised a similar question.

    And the answer is: "Currently, we like '99 and '00 6.5L blocks for any potent power projects."

    As of Summer 2001:

    1994 Chevy K1500 6.5TD Blazer, 4WD, 4L80E & 3.42 Posi.
    Acquired in April, 1999 with 105,000 miles on it.
    Currently 150,000 miles with new DS4 by self at 138,500 miles
    Self-installed mods: Diesel Pro Phazer dual-idler gear set, 97 water pump & thermostat manifold, marine injectors, FSD Cooler and resister upped 7 to 9, all from Kennedy Trailers Sales and Service, USA distributor for Diesel Services Group.
    Hella Vision Plus Halogen conversion headlamps, Bilstein shocks, Northland heated wipers.
    Jannetty Racing installed: mandrel bent ATS 3" down pipe & DynoMax 3" Cat back exhaust, plus yanked out the Snorkle & milled out the diaphram in the Air Inlet Duct.

    1995 GMC K2500 6.5TD Sierra SL, 4WD, 4L80E & 4.10.
    Acquired in April, 2001 with 140,400 miles on it.
    Currently 145,000 miles, with new DS4 by prior owner at 32,600.
    Mods: AMS Oil 2-Stage foam air filter element (I found that their #S1443 fit better than the regular offering).

    Eventually both vehicles will be equally upgraded.

    Too keep from frying pistons the first thing I would do is install boost and egt gauges. If it's going to be a conversion I would stick with a mechanical pump like the '92-93 6.5s had.
