Default 2006-2007 Cummins info

Starting to look for parts to do a diesel swap into my R30. Came across a Cummins 24v that appears to be a 2006-2007 vintage. No head, but all the rest of the parts appear to be there (including entire valve train). Been searching around but haven't found the info I'm looking for, which is can I go with an earlier head and convert back to mechanical? Electronics don't scare me, so getting the correct head and sourcing an ECU is also an option.
