Default WTB: 1993 GM Diesel with Manual Transmission

I’m in the market for another 6.5TD with MFI and a NV4500. I’m pretty sure that combination narrows me down to the 1993 model year. Earlier and you had the SM465 transmission and later you had the EFI. But I’m sure there might be some 1992 or 1994 models out there that still hit the sweet spot.

Other than the drivetrain, I’m not too concerned about other features - cab or body arrangement or condition; K1500, K2500, or K3500; Chevy or GMC; etc. It would be nice if it was in the Northeast - say a day’s drive from Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

I’ve been watching craigslist and eBay for awhile. There seem to be more CX500 models with manuals out there than KX500 models. I suppose I could convert the NV4500 from 2WD to 4WD if need be.

Prices seem high, my son bought his last year and we found them in the 2500-3000 range in varying conditions.
    All over the Midwest.

I’m not finding much in the northeast. What comes up is usually 2wd and in the $3500 to $6000 range.

Looks like that one sold - the ad has been removed.

I looked around and we must have got the last one!
I found many automatics. Only one REALLY nice low mileage stick for 6800.
    Good luck!

It took me awhile to find the K2500 in my signature. I know that they were rare from the start and I’m sure that they were more likely used as work trucks and probably have succumbed to attrition faster than daily drivers and such.

Also, I see that you need to disassemble the NV4500 and replace the mainshaft to convert from 2WD to 4WD, so I’d be looking for a 4WD truck from the start.

It’s looking like buying a parts truck with a NV4500 and a parts truck with an MFI diesel would be the way to go. I can find either one of those much easier than the two combined - and for less than they’re asking for the combined version.

So, anything in particular to know to make sure I get compatible parts? I’m fairly certain that the 4.3 V6 version is using the NV3500. But do all the V8s come with an NV4500?

Ok, it’s looking like just the 2500 and 3500 came with the NV4500 - all 1500s were the NV3500?

    Not sure.

I seem to remember test driving a half ton circa 1992/93 that had a 5-speed with a creeper first gear. seems like it was an option but not very common.

Also, I think most earlier 'lighter duty' (no creeper gear) 1/2 tons had a Getrag 5-speed as the NV3500 became available later, maybe 1994/95..

If you search the salvage yards via car-part.com, you can look for 5speeds with and without integral bellhousing. I think the NVs would be in the 'without' category.

Either way, 3/4 and 1 tons are the most likely suspects for the NV4500s.

I wasn’t sure about what transmission the lighter duty trucks had, but it was seeming to not be the NV4500.

I’ve been looking at salvage, but I’m seeing prices comparable to a beater truck just for an NV4500. I’m thinking the beater may be the better option so that I can pull other parts from it - either for my use or to sell.

Still searching. I had been just searching the “cars & trucks” section of craigslist using SearchTempest, but then some playing around found that people aren’t too good about using the proper section - there were a fair number of ads in general, business, auto parts, heavy equipment, and elsewhere. So I started doing more general searches, which turned up a lot more options but still not what I’m looking for.

You do have to pay attention. Lots of people don’t understand the C/K designation and they use just that - GMC C/K2500, for example… Then you have to hope they have an interior shot so you can see if it has the 4WD shifter or not. And all too many have manual transmission listed - only to see the column shifter in the photos. And lots of people just listing “Chevy 4x4 pickup” and you have to see if you can count the lugs in their crappy pictures.

I see a lot more manual transmissions in 1500s and 2WD models. Although many 2500 models are 4x4, few are diesel and invariably they’re an automatic. Then you see manual 3500s, but they’re typically gas (454) and 2WD.

    The search continues...

I know you're looking for a 1993 model, but I have an acquaintance on another forum who has a 1995 K2500 5-speed for sale. Here's what he says:

"It's a 95 Silverado, completely rust free body, upgrades include Heath Max E-torq with Turbo-master, Diamond Eye 4 inch exhaust using a stainless ATS muffler and stainless cat with band clamps, Flowmaster crossover pipe, LS oil cooler lines, 93 lift pump, gm-8 turbo, k47 air box, 99 water pump, Kodiak fan clutch, Duramax plastic cooling fan, Auto Meter mechanical EGT and Boost gauges, recent Delco glow plugs, Ted's rebuilt injectors, and all new front and rear lights. Best of all it only has 152k miles. If it were a 4-door we would be keeping it, I built it to keep for a long time but putting a car seat in the back when we go to the lake is a pain. Feel free to forward the details to your friend, I can guarantee he will not find a nicer or better maintained truck for sale."

Let me know if you're interested, and I can get you his contact info.

Thank you for the reply. I’m mainly looking for parts from an MFI 6.5TD and NV4500 combo to swap into my Yukon to get rid of the EFI and automatic.
