    Default Compressor Upgrade

Greetings from Mississippi. I have a question I was not able to find an answer to in the search files. What are our options as far as a/c compressors? I change the R4s to Sandens on gas engines, but on my '94 6.5 there is not enough room to retrofit a Sanden in the stock R4 location. Is there a better R4 style compressor available or should I just buy the best quality R4 I can find? Thanks

The R4 is not a bad compressor.

The issue is that after a compressor failure the system is full of crap from the train wreck that occurs when these pumps fail.

A good flushing of the entire system, replace the accumulator and then recharge with the prescribed oil and refrigerant.

The R4 pumps just will not tolerate crap running through them.

I have seen R4's replaced due to failure that only lasted a month.

Getting the system clean is the key.

You may consider adding a filter on the return line.

    Good luck.
