Actually, the 4 door Tahoes and Yukons are quite a bit shorter than the Suburbans. If you'll look at the rear doors, you'll notice that the wheel wells on the shorter versions cut into the rear doors, whereas on the longer versions, the doors are larger. That, coupled with the shorter overhang behind the rear axle made a more compact, easier to handle vehicle.
4 door Tahoe: wheelbase is 117.5 in and overall length is 199 in
Suburban: wheelbase is 131.5 in and overall length is 219.5 in
I can see the appeal of the 4 doors.
