Arrow Rust - Protecting Your Truck

Rust
Protecting Your Truck From Rust

Rust... Every year, millions of vehicles suffer many more millions of dollars in damage due to rust. As awful as the cosmetic damage is, rust can even make your vehicle unsafe to drive and you may not even be aware of it. I don't know of a single instance where someone dismantled their truck, sandblasted-stripped-repainted-recoated the metal parts and then reassembled everything to correct the damage caused by rust - just not worth it. What we'll do here is show you how to easily and inexpensively treat this rust problem. Now available to subscribers in the Member's Area.

Your 16 yr old rusty frame looks like 2-3yrs here in the rust belt. I have the inner panels on my trucks coated from new. A good friend of mine does it. He uses a material by WK products called seal out. For lack of a better description it kind of looks like a fancy mustard when sprayed in. It wicks into the crevices and displaces moisture. Being a fluffy paste type it hangs around so you don't have to worry about washing out.

I recently had a truck come in that was freshly done by a Krown oil franchisee. They use a method similar to your article, but they want you back in annually to replenish what migrates.

Another popular product is called Fluid Film. I just recently started using this for spot applications.

Fortunately for me, my radiant floor heat has my buildings warm and dry so the exposed parts don't get too scaly.

Thanks John.

I may do another article before long that discusses how to prepare a new(er) vehicle for the long haul by using one of the pro undercoating methods, like you ones you mentioned, and include Ziebart and possibly other dealer-applied under-coatings.

If anyone has experience with another pro-applied under-coating that they like, let us know.

Arrow Rust-proofing on my 2016 LML

Back in April I had my 2016 GMC LML rustproofed at a local shop that has a fine reputation in the area for quality product and workmanship. They are very busy - I had to wait about 4 months to get the truck done.

The name of the shop is Henderson's located in Midland, MI. They use a product similar to Rustproof Compount L made by Texaco/Chevron. It is a mineral oil based product thinned with Stoddard solvent for spray application.

Thanks Todd,

The under-treatment your truck got sounds a lot like what I do.

My truck's frame and drivetrain were originally undercoated at the factory. Over time, the rough & thick coating began to peel in places, and since the thick coating was sprayed on it didn't wick into/onto other areas beneath the truck.

More than a dozen years ago I got a phone call from a fleet mechanic in the upper Midwest who told me during our conversation that they spray a solution beneath their trucks and service vehicles every year, as part of an annual rust preventive program.

I'll have to replace a couple of the 4" exhaust system clamps this summer because even though the aftermarket exhaust system is stainless-steel, a couple of the clamps are mild steel and could fail because of rust.

Had a customer in with a truck that he has done annually by a Rust Check franchisee. Something like $140/application. Personally, I would probably look at having the rust check done first year. Second year I would investigate how the WK product did for inner panels and have the rust check done externally.
