1st Tranny Flush Questions:

Well I'm getting ready to do my first tranny flush removing the Dextron III
and replacing the fluid to TranSynd. After searching the archives, this
weekend mechanic still has some questions..........

I did not notice any color difference when I flushed and changed to Transynd and added the deep pan - BUT I had drained the tranny pan and refilled with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF prior to making the decision to switch to Transynd/deep pan. I used 4 of 5 gals of the Transynd when I did this. My truck was warm when I did the change - I let it sit about 1 hour after driving it to the shop before I started since I did not want HOT ATF splashing in my face when I pulled the pan filter. My guess is that it makes little difference on the trans temp, but I don't know for sure.

Reading through your steps:

1) It is not necessary to remove the trans pan unless you are changing to the deep pan.
2) Don't forget to buy the deep pan filter and install it if you are changing to the deep pan.
3) The trans pan gasket IS REUSABLE and should survive many on/off cycles.
4) Kennedy suggested using remote start if you have one while starting/stopping the engine while flushing/adding more fluid.
5) The total trans capacity with the stock pan is 12.7 qts, and with the deep pan 15.9 qts - hence my reasoning to use at least 4 gals of Transynd.

STOCK SHALLOW PAN CAPACITY 7.4 QTS (ALL YOU CAN DRAIN)
LARGE PAN CAPACITY 7.4 QTS + 3.2 QTS = 10.6 QTS

TOTAL CAPACITY (DRY SYSTEM) W/SHALLOW STOCK PAN 12.7 QTS
TOTAL CAPACITY (DRY SYSTEM) W/DEEP PAN 15.9 QTS

TORQUE PAN BOLTS = 20 ft lbs
TORQUE DRAIN PLUG = 25 ft lbs
NOTE*
1. Old suction screen seal may stick in.
2. Allison filter has removable magnet.

Also note that tranny cooler and lines hold another 1-2 quarts over and above the capacities listed in Mdrag's post.

mdrag ...... I think it might be good to R&R the pan for the following
stated reason:

"+Cleaned pan - Wiping bottom of pan with paper towel came up black with
what was assumed to be particulate metals, etc. Very glad I did this!"

I have the time to do it, and it would also give me a snapshot of what might
degree of wear in going on in my tranny.

Well I picked up the 5 gal. bucket of TranSynd..... I took a
little out and compared it to the Dextron III. Both fluids
look and feels the same. So much for my idea of looking
for a color change. I'm going to empty and then flush using
all but 1 quart of the 5 gallons of Transynd (keeping my small
pan). Yes I'll be flushing out some of the new Transynd to be
thrown away, but my thinking is that the tranny and system,
will then be darn close to 100% Transynd. Am I on target
or am I missing something?

You'll be just as close to 100% Transynd if you hold back 4 quarts rather than just 1 quart. Then you'll have 2 quarts left for the transfer case, and 2 quarts for topping off the Allison if you ever need to do that.
