Default New Pre-Cups have Arrived! Installation?

The Peninsular economy pre-cups for my 80 Olds Cutlass project have arrived! These are the highest mileage parts they offered. They have the three dot marking and the part number is 14025518.

Anything particular I need to do or notice during the installation? Is there a spec for how flat they need to be to the head?

GM's specs indicate a + or - .002" flush fit. You can have the cup shoulder depth of the cylinder head re-cut if the new cups protrude, or have the head deck resurfaced if they are too deep.

Back in late 1998, our local engine shop pulled the cups when they resurfaced the project 6.5's cylinder heads, then recut the shoulders in the heads that the cups sit against, so the cups were exactly flush.

However, a new cylinder head I saw recently (and used for photos in the recent 6.5 cyl head story) apparently had the cups staked into position, then the head received its final surfacing. You can see the staking dimples in the photos, as well as the final machining marks across both the head deck and cups. It was obvious that the final machining was done with the cups in-place. Our local machine shop was initially concerned about the installed cups chattering on the big sander - due to dissimilar metals (cast iron/stainless) - so chose to remove them before decking the heads.

Let us know what develops with fuel economy...

Jim

Default Head work

I had my heads rebuilt by a reputable shop. It would have been about the same cost as buying rebuilds from a cylinder head dealer though. The machine shop left the precups in the heads, milled them .005" but used cutting bits to handle the precup metal. That's what added to my final cost and time. Pretty pleased with the results since the precups didn't fall out when my buddy dropped one on its end from about a foot (landed on cardboard thankfully).

The Pre-Cups are stuck on there pretty good, I had to give them some hell to get the old ones out!

New ones smacked in fairly easily with a rubber hammer, but they will not fall out, guaranteed.
