I just recentlly installed a set of timing gears, when I started the truck up I could hear the gears rattling.(the two that float in the middle) Was wondering if this is the norm or what. Now I know that sometimes you have to shave the two post on those gears but I'm pretty sure I had enough clearence. I took a piece of paper and it slid in between the cover andf the posts.
Oh and it no longer rattles.

I suppose if a newly started engine was idling rough for a few minutes while the air cleared from the injection system (you mentioned changing the pump on the phone), I suppose there could be some rattle to the gears.

Once the engine begins idling smoothly, it should be hard to detect any gear noise. However, if you remove the oil filler cap, you will clearly hear the gears doing their thing.

Glad you got it running....
