I need to know the empty weight of my truck.

I have KY tags on my D/A, long bed, extended cab 2002 GMC 2500HD. In KY, I had 10,000 pound tags. In IN, they have a 7000 pound tag.

I looked through my information, but can't find the empty weight of my truck. Has anyone weighed their truck, as shipped from the factory?

In KY, I was told that the tag weight should cover the truck and anything towed. That is why I went with the 10,000 pound tag. In IN, the tag only has to cover the truck and any load one wants to haul in the truck. The trailer weight is not considered.

Curb weight for an 2500HD extended cab, long box, 4x4 with D/A has got to be more than that. Closer to 7k I would think!

Not to question you, Mackin! If'n you're runnin' drugs on your truck, yours could be a bit lighter! :D

I have a 01 3500 DRW and my tags are 9000lbs. That's approx. 7200lb truck + 1900 lb pin weight. The lady at the DMV told me it's what the truck weighs on a scale. You are responsible for getting the correct rating. I figure I'm close.

CAT certified big rig scale results with me (150lbs)in the driver's seat(see the signature below for my truck's specs):

Front axle: 4000lbs
Drive axle: 2640lbs

I've got 18,000lb plates on my truck. In Missouri its the combined weight (truck + trailer). My fiver weights 10k or so.

Thanks for the feed-back, fellows. Looks like the 7000 pound tags would be cutting it very closely. May have to opt for the heavier tag.

Same truck except short box, FW hitch (150#), Rhino Liner (?), and Westin Tubes (50#), full tank, no passengers.

6740 on CAT scales.

With most trucks weighing in around 4000lbs on the front axle, that only leaves 800lbs of a load on the front. Put a 2500lb load in the bed, and I'm sure some of that is going to apply to the front axle, then add 5 200lb men in the cab? How can this be?

Now I know why they don't want a snowplow on these trucks. If they're only 800lbs away from front axle capacity EMPTY! :rolleyes:

Weight behind the rear axel will pull weight off the front end. Think or a lever and were you put weight in relation to the fulcrum. But there is also the problem of 800# on the axel....the farther forward the weight is from the axel the more weight the axel will actually see. Same simple lever idea.

When my 8'6" fisher V goes up front I will put quite a bit of weight in the rear behind the axel to pull as much weight off the nose and because weight on the wheels cant be a bad thing in the snow ;) Trimbrens(sp?) also supposedly help with ride quite a bit up front and I will invest in them but I have no personal experience yet.

This is also why I think GM dont like EX cab and plowing.....more weight on the nose. And the ability to go plow with 4 guys in the cab

4000# is also Chevys rating......I think there is a healthy margin for safety in there.....I dont think 4001#'s will cause parts to disintegrate ;)

The front end capacity was one reason I was thinking of going ford though :eek: If I wasnt so afraid of the 6.0 shooting its guts it would have been a much harder decision.

Might be part of the reason GM looked into Al heads.....actually I'm betting that that is the main push behind developing a AL headed diesel. I cant see any other benifit or using AL in our application. JMO

This is correct.

When I hitch up to my fifth wheel which, by the way has a pinweight of 2100 lbs. the front axle weight is 20 lbs. less than without the trailer hitched. 4280 lbs. vs. 4260 lbs. And this is off a certified CAT scale.

Remaining numbers for the below truck without the trailer, but with driver and full tank:

Front: 4280
Rear: 3140

Total: 7420

I weighed my truck today at Flying J. It is equiped as shown below, with a full fuel tank, driver and passenger. Total weight was 7180 pounds.

my truck 3500 cc (see sig)and my fat a$$ (305). 8100 on a fairbanks scale. and the dumb twit at the dealer set me up with 9000 lb tags.

My registration from the dealer stated 6500 light and 9200 gross.

I could care less what the light weight actually is, the gross is all I need.

In CT the registration fee is based on the gross weight.

2 yrs = $230.00 --- :mad: OUCH :mad:

Oh well.

See if I can't stop by the local gravel bank and get weighed.

You fellows may get a charge out of this.

I registered my 03 CC short bed 4x4 D/A in person in Vermont. I had bought it out of state, so I went into the VT DMV myself. The GVWR is 9200 lbs, so I put 9200 on the registration form.

The fellow behind the counter asked me what I was going to be hauling in this truck, and I told him probably nothing heavier than a dozen grocery bags. So he "suggests" to me that I might want to list a lesser weight. I asked, "How much lesser?". He says, "Whatever in your judgment is a good weight". Needless to say, I listed a much "lesser" weight, and saved a bundle.

I am sure nothing like that would have ever occurred in my old home state, New Jersey.

Maybe I shouldn't post this but in Texas it's about 75 to 76 dollars for reg. on a 3/4 ton truck, I think you guys are living in the wrong place.

by coincidence i weighed mine this morning

2003 4x4 shortbed ext cab 6.6/at with empty fuel tank and me (190#), nothing else

total 6700
front 4000
rear 2720

now where did that extra 20# come from ?!?!

their scale reads in 20# increments so i figure its just rounding error

My 2001 3500 4x4, ext.cab 8.1 Allison weighs 7000 lbs empty. 3900 front and 3100 rear.

Mine wieghs 7200# with a full tank and me in it. Ext Cab LB 4x4, Gooseneck, Bedmat, Toolbox full of stuff. I think my tags were like 48$ or something close to that,non-commercial of course, our tags dont have a weight rating on them only commercial has that in OHio.

California overregulates and taxes everything to death and they wonder why small/medium businesses leave the state in droves. Hell lots of big businesses leave if they can.

You would at least think the roads would be in good shape. :mad: :mad:
