Hello all, I am considering selling my 2001 3500 ext. cab 4x4, 8.1 and getting a 2003 3500 c.c.4x4, Duramax. I haul 4000lb truck camper with a 6000 lb trailer and only get about 6.5 mpg. I am hoping to get better mileage and power. Has anyone made the upgrade from the 8.1 to Dmax? What are your thoughts? Also any reason to wait to get a 2004? (possible power upgrade?)

Thanks, Steve

I drive both. I have a '01 GMC 2500HD D/A, my brother has a '02 Chevy 2500HD 8.1/A. Both are equipped about the same. We trade often for various reasons. Driving his, in comparison, is a chore. He gives his up anxiously.

Both have comparitive power. The Duramax has the fuel mileage edge hands down. Towing my 11,800# 5'er with the Duramax seems like a pleasure compared to the 8.1's screaming. The Duramax pulls the hills more easily, even though his truck is several hundred #'s lighter.

I realize that you are talking about 3500's, but my comparison is apples to apples for the purposes you request.

As far as the '03 or '04 question, I would recommend the '04. Another option for you would be to find a good '01. The '04 is rumored to have a significant power upgrade, easier accessed injectors and a change in some of the technology. The '01 (for CA) has no smog components, and can easily and safely be boosted beyond that of the '04, and at about half the complete cost of the '04. Another thing to consider may be the current situation with our fine Яepublik of Kalifornia government. Tags on a new truck could be upwards of $3000. A depreciated used truck would be about 1/4 that.

This is my experience and opinion. Never mind the physics.

Steve, SDaver could tell you a lot. However, I have the 8.1 in the "Burb" and the 6.6 in the truck (my second). I'm guessing you drive a fair amount? The Diesel would be your best bet for fuel mileage. Out of the shoot it will get better MPG but don't count on it doing well until 20k rolls over. Looking at your sig, I would say "get an 03" now. The "NEW" turbo (04') will be very nice and have "new" problems. The surefooted & solid turbo in the 03' should last for many years, without a problem. If you have time to monkey around with the truck... get the 04' and if you don't have time to waste, get the 03'.

Besides, GM is kicking out all kinds of low numbers with low % to boot. :D
