is the fuel filter for the d/m, for the 03 the same one that you use on the 02, or are they different?

When I went to the dealer they said something about useing "only" the black filter. However, they did say that you could use either the blue or black one for 01 & 02 models.

Burner, they were referring to the oil filter. 03 uses the black filter. I install the 'black'filter on all oil changes on the d-maxs. Yes, fuel filter is same 01-03

O.K., now you have my full attention. Is there a difference between the OIL FILTERS on the 2003 Duramax vs. the previous years oil filters.

I thought the AC Delco PF2232 fit all of the the Duramaxes. What does blue or black mean???

Please shed any light on this.

The Black is the OEM Duramax Filter, The Blue is the AC Delco Filter Part#2232

I'm wondering if I understand your post correctly - are you saying that the recommended filter for the'03 Dmax is the black Champion and the blue AC Delco PF2232 oil filter is NOT recommended for the '03?

I cut open both of these filters and they appear to be the same construction. I have no way of verifying that the filter media is the same.

There are pics of cut open filters - including the OEM black Champion and the AC Delco filters at the first link in my sig.

Sorry for the confusion. The Black filter is sold across the dealer parts counter in an Izusu box, I dont know the part no. I am not sure what a champion filter is?. Its recommended That the ac delco filter not be used on the 03 because it will not hold up to the extreme oil pressures. Before that gets taken the wrong way.......HOlD ON

I personally havent seen excessive pressure on 03 compared to older models. We are being advised that the delco filter is not recommended on the 03 but the 'black' filter is an acceptable replacement for all models. We dont even stock the delco filter anymore for that reason. IIRC, the difference in filters is that the black has some type of flow valve?! I havenot cut them open side by side and looked... But in the interest of TDP members, I will get more information on this as soon as I can, It will probably include a phone call to par-tech (gmparts tech line) I will post an answer to this as soon as I find out more...

DmaxalliTech...thanks for checking into this. I went into my local GM dealer for a filter on my '03, and he said the standard AC 2232 filter is listed for all years. I remembered reading an earlier post on this, and so I've hesitated getting a filter until I can find what the correct one should be.

My previous oil filters were AC #2232. Usually cost about $10-$11. I haven't seen a Black oil filter since the one my truck came with. I needed a oil filter a couple weeks ago, so I went to a different nearby dealer. He handed me a white box with a Black oil filter inside, I was surprised to see it! I said "an old filter uh" and he said "I just got them in". Cost $15 for the black one.

As mentioned by dmaxallitech, the owners manuals lists the PF2232 filter for my '03. My local dealer also shows this to be correct. Are there different P/N's for the two filters?

Ok, just got off the phone with GM tech-line. Asked about the difference in oil filters.....NONE

The difference is that the 'black' filter, part no. 97214983 is the oem replacement element where as the pf2232 is the ac delco replacement piece. I suppose its similer to the fuel filter on our trucks, The one you buy from the dealer is just white, no writing on it. Racor filter avail from parts house has racor name on it. Racor is OEM supplier for fuel filter. Same filter, different can. Hope I didnt throw anybody off the deep end but I thought I had heard of a difference. They both contain the same internal valving and paper element. So, looks like either one will do ok. I am going to install Amsoil dual bypass set up on mine so wont have to worry about it for now....Hope this info helps everyone
