DSG Timing Gears TDC have to be at -1.75 or not

May question is why does the TDC have to be set to -1.75 to -1.9 on my '98 6.5TD? I am currently at -.7 and the engine seems to run fine. Isn't this a computer controlled pump that sets the timing and everything? What is the propose of advancing the TDC that much, to keep from setting codes?

I usually leave product-specific queries to those who sell or use them, but the answer is simple.

The gearset offers a 2deg advantage over the chain set. Other than that, the timing may be set to oem specs, or to 'chip' specs.

Add a 'chip',charge air cooler,and exhaust and -1.9 or so is the max advance for performance.

The OBD-I 1500 series were factory set at -1.5\+8.5 deg.

If you're satisfied with the performance, -.7 is of no consequence.

While I was on the phone with Bill Heath I ask him the question also. His comment was -1.5 TDC offset. The reason he gave was a vehicle used for towing this in his opinion was the best setting. Anything above this creates higher cylinder pressure and heat. Yes you do get better response at -1.75 to -1.9 but with added heat.
