How about a high miles contest?

Any year Duramax, highest mileage recorded on the odometer wins - your choice of any TDP Book (http://www.thedieselpage.com/books.htm).

If you win, we'll need a digital photo of the odometer and at least one good front 3/4 exterior photo, along with a couple paragraphs of text describing the truck's history and your use of it. The miles don't have to be all yours.

Let's begin by saying I've got 51,000 miles on my '01! :D

Here is a 'high miler' '02...and what appears to be a SMOKIN' deal. I would consider the rolling chassis and tranny worth the current price. Even if the motor didn't go another 100K (which it likely would) you could drop a low mile LB7 from a wreck and have ~15K in this truck!!!

Too bad its only 2WD...

My '01 GMC 2500 has a little over 170k miles on it. I gave it to my foreman when I bought a new '04. Tried to trade it with him but he said he would rather keep the '01. I have 4 other trucks in my business that I wish were Duramax's.
I had 4 injectors changed on the '01 under warranty, a water pump & an alt. but I still like the truck very much. I ordered it new in December of 2000 & got it in Feb. I only bought the new "Duramax" diesel after reading all about on this website.

In addition to a choice of any book, TDP will throw in a free Option A membership/renewal and a Duramax Diesel hat/t-shirt.

2002 GMC Sierra 3500 2WD Crew Cab Dually 232,000 and climbing!!!! Injectors replaced twice, 1st at around 140k and last at 190k, Turbo replace and injection pump also replaced around 200k. No blow by either!!! 6 new tires, fresh oil, and just bought a Bully Dog Power Pup. Also got a Bully Dog Shift Kit that I am going to install pretty quick so I can change all the fliud and filters in the tranny. Having a hard time with one problem though, my milage stinks. I am getting around 12-13mpg on the highway, and 10mpg around town. Hard to start, but if I put a brand new fuel filter on it has no problem, but one tank of fuel and back to hard starting again. Please anyone with any suggestions PLEASE write to me at ImSweetDaddy@aol.com Thanks For Reading!!!! Eric Muenzler

WHO'S THE WINNER? Why I'd say anyone who posts as many miles as some of these guys are all winners, course the final winner will depend on what date the awards are given out, right? I know I don't have a chance, but I do have 84,000miles on the factory tires and they look like they'll make it until winter time, thats probably when I'll put new ones on. Great contest!!

So, you veggie oil burners, put the pedal to the metal, and get those miles on!!!

I sold my 2001 D/A 2500HD crew cab srw, that I bought new, to a good friend about a year ago with 285,000 miles on it. It now has 317,000 miles. It was a loaded SLT and used with a 38 foot Featherlite trailer for my business. I build hot rods and Corvettes for people accross the country and offer personal service, so I travel a lot for pickups, deliveries and some shows. As of this day, the truck is literally in perfect condition, everything works great and it gets 18 - 19 MPG unloaded and 10 - 11 MPG with 12,000 - 14,000 lbs of trailer. Other than a nightmare of injector problems (it's on it's 3rd set of injectors), It has had no problems or repairs. I have done regular services religiously and of course new tires as necessary. Believe it or not, it still has the original brake pads! The truck is 100% stock, except for the gooseneck hitch, 56 Gal fuel tank from transfer flow and my Sirius satelite radio. I now have an equivalent 2005 D/A 3500 srw with 120,000 miles and I love it. No problems, not even injectors

I too chose Duramax after lurking on this site for months. Thank you. I took delivery of my Chevy 2500HD Ext. Cab LS D/A delivery 09/08/2001. It has had a relatively light duty life even though I've put on 168,000 miles: I live in Monument, Colorado. Drive 100 miles round trip to work and back each weekday. Take two lane roads to Denver; generally travel at 55mph. I get 19 to 20 mpg in winter; 20 to 21 mpg in summer. I also pull a 26.5ft 5th wheel camper around Colorado and surrounding states a couple times a year on vacation. I can achieve 12mpg while pulling if I stay on two lane roads and run around 55mph. The truck still drives beautifully. I run Michellin M&S 265 75 16's and get 50,000 out of them. Dino Oil. It still has the original brake pads all around. Nuetral Safety switch replaced at 38,000, just out of warranty. All the injectors replaced under warranty at 104,000 and again at 119,000 under warranty. 1st replace may not have used the updated injectors. New Batteries 2 months ago. Left front axle seal replaced 2 weeks ago. I figure I spent all my fuel savings on maintenance costs over the years but, I still love this truck. Plan to keep it to 300K miles and year 2012.

2002 Chevy 2500HD Duramax Diesel

I bought this 2002 Chevy 2500HD Duramax powered truck in August of 2002, which replaced a 1994 6.5L 2500 ext short box. I followed the progress of the Duramax on The Diesel Page with much anticipation. This truck was everything that you guys said it was.

http://www.thedieselpage.com/readers/BrianDuPont02.jpg

I use this truck for towing cargo trailers, 29' camper trailer, 20' boat, and for work. I install commercial kitchen equipment for restaurants, hospitals, and various institutions, so I travel all over the East Coast and as far away as Texas. As far as maintenance on this truck, I change the oil about every 7,500 miles and the fuel filter every 12,000 miles. I used Shell Rotella 15-40 since new. I've never used any fuel additive, but in hindsight perhaps I should have. I had all the injectors replaced at 180,000 miles under warranty. The Bosch high-pressure fuel pump was also replaced at 240,000 + miles - now I run Stanadyne fuel additive in the fuel. The truck routinely delivered 21 mpg till the injectors were replaced, which dropped fuel economy to the 18 mpg range. Plans include running this truck to at least 300K before I replace with it another Duramax.

I should have been a bit more careful in my choice of words/generalization...I do believe that the older Ford diesels were actually quite good and did in fact live long. I was referring to the newer models that I have heard are not quite so good at longetivity.

Ok so I bought my "01 Duramax?Allison truck from a norh slope oil company...first off I love to say it is running really great. If you can find on standard cab 4x4 for less than $11,500 go for it. Typical of slope workers they had cut the e-brake cable, added block heaters, pan heaters, tranny heaters, cut hole in roof for search lights and more. On the good side it came to me with 2 newer Red top Gell cells. I did have to replace the worn 7.5 radials with 265/75/16 E rated BF all terrain, I also added a full K&N filter and intake set. I was/am still amazed with the 1-2 Gallon per mile I have gained. Now for the cool part, my truck has well over 6 thousand running hours on the motor and is a will keep being our dailiy driver for a few mor years I want to know who else has this really high miles and what if and issues have they had!!!!

Alaskamax, I doubt your truck from the north slope has a whole lot of miles on it, its hard to rack up a lot of miles during white outs, but they used to keep the engines running all the time when the temp got really low, so a lot of those 6000 hours is probably idle time, non the less thats a lot of hours, if the average speed was 30 mph that would amount to 180,000 miles, maybe when I drive up to Alaska next time I'll look you up and see this truck. In fact I'd really like to visit the plant at Prudo Bay since some of the equipment I designed t has been there since the 70's. I'd like to see how it still looks inside those modules. I may just have to check into that before I head up there. Probably be 3 or 4 years away yet, before I'll have the time, but I'm going to make that trip on day.

If you have the ZF6... watch out for the clutch/pressure plate and dualmass flywheel. They just can't take the DuraMax beating. If you have the 4x4, watch out for the x-fer case leak. There's a known problem with a little 4 bit clip that rubbs a hole in the bottom of the case and all of a suden... lots of noise.

Just keep it clean and talk nicely to it. It will carry you all the way home.

Mike, Thanks for the information. I live in Northern Michigan and will start the truck and let it warm up. I have noticed a transfer case leak under the truck if it idles more than 5 minutes or so, but no noise. I just assumed a bad seal at the yoke. I did replace the yoke around 100,000 miles. I understand the head gaskets can also be a problem. If so, is this typical for engines over 200,000? By the way, my truck is a 4 X 4.

Thanks, Scott

MRE now has ~600K miles since summer 2004 on the combined operation of a 2005 (~80K miles), 2001 (~100K miles), 2002 (~150K miles), 2004 Kodiak (~110K miles), and two 2006 Duramaxes (~160K) .

Highest single truck mileage attained was on the 2002 K3500 - purchased with 130K and sold with 280K. By operating the trucks mainly inside their warranty periods before trading, we have minimized high dollar out-of-pocket repairs to:

2006 K3500 smoked one Allison torque converter, taking the transmission with it in the process ($3000 total cost of parts/labor)
2002 K2500 grenaded one transfer case ($1800 total cost of parts/labor)
2001 K2500 blew a head gasket, was sold with problem disclosed, at a discounted price of ~$2000.'Wearable' parts we have replaced:

12 sets (of 4) Michelin tires;
3 pairs of Delco replacement batteries, 1 pair of Optima red tops;
5 sets (of 4) replacement shocks;
5 brake jobs;
>60 oil changes;
>40 transmission drain and fills with spin-on filter
2 rear pinion seals
2 axle bearing seals (C4500 Eaton rear)
3 front wheel bearings
1 starter
1 water pump... we have received 4 sets of 'free' injectors under GM warranty, valued at over $15K.

Not the most by the looks of some posts, but my '01 LB7 has 270K on the odometer. My first set of injectors were replaced at 175K and I've got one that is getting flaky (balance rate of -2.6 to -4.0; just a wisp of smoke detected at the TP).

Some truck you got there! Looks to me like you got this contest wrapped up. Especially with an average speed of over 200 MPH.

Hey everyone,
I am new to the group. I am used truck shopping. Is their a point where you need to pass on a used Duramax as far as high miles? I realize it depends a lot on what kind of maintaince it has had. As far as what I can afford i am looking at 04 or 05 trucks and they are all over the board from 50k to over 300k.

Thanks
Buck

348K miles and only 1 injector? If legit, this is outstanding! My ('01 LB7) injectors only lasted 187K before they started smoking. 2nd set started checking out after 95K more. Now, I smell diesel in the exhaust after 55K on the 3rd set. Balance rates (while not all inclusive) are all over the place but still under the max of 4.0/6.0 (park/in gear).

339K miles on mine and the head gaskets were recently replaced. Rear xfer case cover suffered the wear hole thing and that was replaced too. Water pump at 189K miles. Still, I'd get another DMax. Which one though?

Update Nov. 2011 now at 192,000 had to replace a set of injectors at around 168,000 miles other than that, a new trans computer and NBUS switch. Still a great truck. Oh by the way those original tires went 102,000 miles. I use Mobil 1 for all oils except the engine which uses Shell.

May 2014,update, just turned 220,000. Have towed 15,300 lb fith wheel all over the US and still going strong. WHAT A TRUCK.

Yesterday I became a proud owner of an 07 classic chevy ccsb 4by. With 334K on her. I have been playing with the idea of getting a dmax for sometime. Then this truck came across. the truck drove out good and the 2 previous owners kept great maintence records, its bone stock and the money was right at 10K. Sooo shes mine. anything I should really take a look at with those miles?

206500. Pretty much all original equipment. Wondering if I should replace waterpump, radiator hoses or starter or just keep driving it?

I'd not replace the waterpump unless you notice it's leaking at the weep hole - or if you need to replace the head gaskets. Absent cooling system overpressure due to head gasket problems, the water pump seal should last for a long-long time.

The ol' Tahoe made it to 375K miles before popping a head gasket in July of 2021 - she showed no symptoms of any issues at all, but suddenly popped without warning, causing the rear two cylinders to fill with coolant when sitting for more than a few moments. I could have slapped some gaskets back on and called it good, but ended up rebuilding a low-mileage 506 block to drop in, and I've currently got around 390K on the clock and about 15K on the new engine.
