FYI guys, gals.
Just got of the phone w/ my Dad, JOMAR, he's on vacation in cool (but smoky) Colorado, and he told me he was having "downshift" problems going over Monarch Pass. He checked fluid level before starting out and level was fine. Then he checked it after a pretty good haul, and it showed "Overfull." That's when he was having the downshift problems, which is indicative of an overfilled trans. Anyway, he stopped in at the local dealer and peeked under the hood of another '02 Chevy and noticed the culprit.
The new truck had a Black stopper while his had a Red stopper. Lenght comparison was three inches short on the Black one. He borrowed the "right" one and drained out 1.5qts to the proper level w/ the proper dipstick.

So, if any of ya'll have a red stoppered dipstick, it is probably the wrong one. The wrong numbered one is 15074815. It should be black stoppered w/ # 15074816. It also should have a black ball on the tip w/ several "v" notches on one side for level indicators.

Other than that he says his D/A pulls his 5er like a stripped a$$ed ape !!
:D :D

how do you know the dip stick tube is not shorter? to match the shorter stick.... It could be a gas and diesel snafu!

All Allison transmission applications in the 2500 and 3500's use the same tube and dipstick. The stick should bottom out in the pan. The ball on the tip of the stick rests in the pan divot, and the stick "gathers" in the tube. The correct stick is the black one. The lever end of the stick should stick out of the tube 1/4 to 1/2 inch when first inserted. The stick gathers in the tube when pushed the remaining distance then locked down.
