View Full Version : borrowed time??
About how long do these engines last before stranding me on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere? I'm just looking for general rule of thumbs here. The ONLY thing my 203,300 mile motor has had replaced are the vac pump, and the injector pump. It now has a green tag pump. That and regular oil changes. I cut my filters open and have never found even the slightest hint of metal. I know the rings are going, but other than that it is good. On the hiway it sees 3000 rpm towing about 7000# trailer about 400 miles a weekend. Other than that it is a daily driver. Should I start looking for parts now?? Thanks

I am certainly no expert, but based on what I have read on this board it looks like it would be time to put on a new crank pully (with the rubber insert) and new timing chain or phazer gear. Probably injector time too. These engines seem to go 300,000 miles for the fortunate. Most of the problems seem to be with the injector pump and PMD.

You need about 25,000 miles to catch up to my truck. I just changed my timing chain and gears this past month a noticeable difference.

Yes it would be in your best interest if you plan to keep the beast to get a spare motor built and ready for the install for the shortest amount of down time. I have been told +or- 20,000 miles of 200,000 is the magic number if you tow alot! Just my .02! Later.
