What diesel pickup or SUV do you drive now?

Have you owned any other brand of diesel pickup or SUV?

Why did you buy what you have now?

How many years of experience do you have with diesel light-trucks/SUV's?
-----------------------------

I would answer these questions by saying I've owned a GM diesel pickup and/or SUV since 1986, beginning with the 6.2L/6.5L. We now have both a 1994 6.5TD Chevy Blazer and a 2001 GMC D/A.

GM's have always been our preferred pickup trucks, but we have owned Ford and Plymouth cars.

Survey says

1) 2001 3500 Silverado LT 4WD D/A
2) No, the Dmax is my very first diesel AND first pick-up.
3) I was looking at the 8.1L and did not give any serious thought to a diesel engine UNTIL AFTER I read the Motortrend articles on the DMAX. Then started looking around for more information, stumbled onto TDP forums around Feb'01 - and ordered my Dmax the end of March '01 as a result of all the great information from this forum.
4) Less than 1 year experience with diesels, but learning something new almost every day. See #3 above. :D

2. 1982 6.2 GMC 4x4 (POS)Problems from day one; 1995 Ford PSD F350, 96 Ford PSD F250 Got rid of F350 right away (too much of a pain to in drive in town CC,LB) Drove 96 F250 for over 100K. Started to have problems and no one at Ford could/would tell what was wrong. Have since learned it was probably the Cam Position Sensor.
3. See # 2 and I have had good luck with GM gassers in the past.
4. Off and on since 82 but most of it since 95 so 7 + yrs but that's misleading because since I have had this rig it more like a friggin disease then a mode of transportation.

previous diesels : Mercedes Benz 190 D , (talk about slow) Olds 98 ( a real luxury cruiser ) and Olds Cutlas. Had more trans problems on the olds (th 200 ) than with engines.

ordering 2003 GMC ext cab d/a longbed from Buckles

sure wish this site had been around when I had the OLDS or the first GMC (of course there wasn't even internet then !!) I took a LOT of ribbing from my buddies about my first 6.2 , but another bud got a 87 1 ton dump 6.2 , put banks turbo on it and proceeded to come in first place at every truck weight pull he took it to. (even against d/c,psd and gassers) I guess all the ribbing I took , but the good luck I've had with these trucks is why I get so CRANKY when someone post on here that the dmax is the first gm diesel worth owning. And Dr Lee just told me my 85 shortbed GMC is RARE with combined production Chevy/GMC of only 1,000 ! Yeah would like to see DMAX/ ALLY in new shortbed !

no other diesel "pick ups" though we have 5 Mack's, a Kenworth, 2 Auto Car's, 2 International's, as work trucks.

Why...let me see. this makes no sense, but we were checking out the new avalanche....and John had a bright idea to drive the Duramax... called me up brought it home for a test drive weekend, and the rest is history....

we have had a few diesel "work" pickups... though we don't work on them so I guess I'm a diesel Virgin...

3) I truly believe Chevrolet has the best trucks on the market that fit my personal needs. Comfort, style, and ride quality. Now it has the get up and go to boot.....With the Duramax
I am also bias to Chevrolet so perhaps I'll quit at that.

4) Never enough.Bought my first Diesel in 1993 still learning everyday thanks to The DP. In addition I'll never go back to gas in a truck.

1989 Ford E350 w/7.3 IDI 290,000 miles and purred like a kitten, Tranny sucked - E4OD
1980 VW Rabbit diesel - Great car but I got tired of changing head gaskets
3. I bought the Dmax for the power, mileage and hopefully longevity. Always was partial to GM.
4. Owned and driven diesels since 1986 and drove and maintained a number of OTR trucks for a few years. Diesels definetly grew on me over the years. :D

1. I drive a '95 3500HD 6.5 5sp., Wife drives '02 D/A 3500 Crew Cab Dually

2. I have owned Fords with 6.9's and 7.3's. Switched to GM when 3500HD's and 6.5's came out. Been with GM ever since (hace 1 Chevy and 2 GMC's now) even had a couple of Top Kick's

3. Replaced '95 K3500 Ext. Dually 6'5/5sp. with D/A because I found the right truck at the right price and was lured by 0% financing. I would say that gas is for lawnmowers but my 2 commercial riding mowers are diesel so I would have to say "Gas is for weed wackers"

4. Been driving deisels since I have been driving and only owned 2 gas trucks ever. Never ever owned a car!

What diesel pickup or SUV do you drive now?

99 F250 superduty powerstroke 4x4 xcab 96k virtually troublefree miles (pulling 15k+ for 1/3 of them)
01 chevy HD2500 4x4 xcab Dmax-jury still out

Have you owned any other brand of diesel pickup or SUV?

98 Dodge 2500 xcab 4x4 cummins-4 trannies 18 months-54k Chrysler bought the piece of s@#t back!

Why did you buy what you have now?

I wanted a truck as tough and reliable as the Superduty, but with a few more creature comforts (better ride, better back seat, quieter, etc) just taking a chance. Actually I needed a new truck and the ford dealer sold the truck I was going to buy to someone else so I bought the Chevy from the dealership next door to **** them off.(not trying to start anything, just answering the questions honestly)

How many years of experience do you have with diesel light-trucks/SUV's?

3 diesels, 3 different manufacturers, in 4 years

I currently have a 2001, GMC D/A K3500, I also have a 93 Chev. 6.5 K3500.

I puchased an 84 K3500 6.2L in 1990. This was my first pickup. I put 200K on it and it ran like a champ. I loved that pickup. I have never owned anything but GM pickups and cars. My dad bought his first Diesel pickup in 1984. A Ford diesel how I strayed form the nest I don't know, but that was my first exposure to diesel pickups. I bought the Dmax for its towing ability, and for the satisfaction in knowing that for first time in a long time, I can run with anything on the road.

I have been watching "TDP" for about 2yrs.
This is the best place for info on the DURAMAX.
Love this truck.

Thanks for letting me be a part of this great fourm.

Its amazing how many diesel newbies that the D/A combination has brought in. That should speak volumes to the manufacturers of what people are intersted in and what they are willing to pay to get it!

What diesel pickup or SUV do you drive now?
* * * 1984 Silverado Pickup - purchased in 1991 - with new SAA 6.2L diesel installed in 2002.

Have you owned any other brand of diesel pickup or SUV? * * * NO.

Why did you buy what you have now?
* * * To apply my years of professional diesel engine analysis to my own vehicle, to own a pickup, and to see OVER traffic.

How many years of experience do you have with diesel light-trucks/SUV's?
* * * If an 800-foot cruise ship is a Sport Utility Vessel ;) , then over 25 years of diesel experience.

(1) See sig.

(2) NO

(3) Mileage and reliability (I hope!). My in-laws had a '93 6.5l that finally died a few months ago. It had 338,000 miles on it. The truck did lots of pulling and was very poorly maintained. I bought my truck new in Dec '97. I figured with a little maintenance it should last a long time.

(4) 4 years.

Currently Own a 2002 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 CC/SB DMAX/Allison

Only previous diesel I owned briefly was a 1996 (I think) K1500 6.5TD

Bought because I needed more power than my 6.0 1500HD was giving me.

Best truck I have ever driven and been lucky enough to own.

2002 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel (it's a cast iron 360 c.i. six cylinder)

NO

The Cummins engine. The warranty. The styling. The solid front axle on the 4x4. The FUEL MILEAGE. The proven life expectancy.

Three years and counting.

1. 99 old style Z71 gasser.
2. 1982 6.2 2WD 130K and 1984, 6.2 4wd 160K. GM only My dad recently retired from the Janesville plant after 41 years. Kinda makes you loyal.
3. It was the only extended cab 4x4 available on a lot when I wanted to buy with in 200 miles.
4. Since 1984.

ps: I posted this because even though I don't currently own a diesel my next truck will be a 2500HD CC and regardless of the engine I find this forum more useful than others.

1. 2002 GMC Duramax/Allison (see sig)
2. First Diesel Pickup, but have had dozens of diesel tractors, combines, ect on the farm.
3. Traded up from 2000 1500 Ext Cab 4x4, needed more mileage and payload capacity for the farm, the 1500 wouldn't be able to last long putting 3000 lbs in the bed and towing 25,000 lb wagons on the farm, (although it tried a couple of times, lol, she didn't really lack too much on power, but on everything else). Love the 5 mpg better milage than the 5.3L gave. Power is great for towing, but she isn't really a speed deamon.
4. 6 months pickup, many years farming

2) No, the only "diesel" pickups I have owned were GM.

3) Truck - to tow my 50' trailer. Cars - for fuel mileage.

4) My first experience was when my dad bought a '78 Chevy PU with a 5.7 diesel. Of course I have been a mechanic for almost 25 years now so I have had plenty of experience with all brands.

I currently drive a 2001 GMC 2500HD Ext Cab SLE 4x4 short box Duramax 6 speed bought in December of 2000.

With the exception of my first car (77 honda Civic) I have driven nothing but GM Trucks

I bought the Duramax because my old truck was 15 years old and had 330,000 kms and it wouldn't handle a trailer with 8,000 lbs very well.

I have 23 years experience starting with a 79 GMC with a 5.7 Diesel. In late 85 I bought an 86 GMC with a 6.2 Diesel, 4 spd. manual trans. This truck worked real well and was still purring when I traded it on the Dmax.

Now why did I choose the D/A over the 8100 or the 6000 ...? well let's just say fuel mileage....8100 is what I had really considered because we a 48' gooseneck for racing and needed the power and like I said Fuel economy.....So here I am with a 2002 ext. cab SB 4X4 2500HD with the D/A combonation....Thanks guys....

4. this is the first year and I will not probably go back to a Gasser in a truck again....

Answering this makes me feel old, really experienced, but not necessarily wise.
1. 2002 GMC Duramax 2500HD 4X4 Longbed LT - 4 months old - just finished 13,000 mile 3 month jaunt to Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, including 1,000 miles off road 4X4 (jungle mud)
2. All GM chassis, but had a 84 GMC CC 4X4 Dually with a Case/Cummins hopped up 6BTA diesel by Cummins Las Vegas with dual Gear Vendors OD that I drove 400,000 miles - only problem was the Turbo 400 trans - towing 20,000 lb trailer hard on torque converters.
3. Bought new Duramax (ordered 2/2001 - received 11/2001) after studying the engine and trans a great deal, reading this site a bit, and driving one. Ford was no option (too loud, too rough riding, had seen too many alongside road Dead in Mexico), Dodge was no option (great engine, to narrow a power band though, poor automatic transmission). As the chassis and body of my 93 GMC 4X4 CC 6.5 Peninsular engine vehicle were just about worn out for long distance traveling, it was either build another one, or buy a Duramax. Like the smell off new leather.
4. Owned over 20 6.2 (all but the 82 were Banks Turbo including 2 new new 91 Surburbans GMC Factory Banks Turbo'd and guaranteed) and 6.5 diesels since 1982. Over a million miles without a major engine failure. 82 to 84 had bad injection pumps, 85 to 90 no problems, 91 subs were great, 94 CC was lemonlawed (6 injection pumps and 3 transmissions in 12,000 miles - one tranny lasted 300 miles), gave me a new 95 which was just as bad - dumped it after 8 months of breakdowns. Bought used (100,000 mi) 93 6.5 4X4 CC, put brand new Peninsular 300 hp 6.5 in it, built the 4L80E trans, added US Gear Overdrive, and ran it over 100,000 miles in Mexico in 3 years. Beat the chassis body to death. Engine like new, trannys constantly failed. It got 20 mpg at 85 mph. Besides Duramax CC, also have 99 6.5 4X4 Suburban. All my kids had GM diesel pickups or Blazers in the 80's. Foster kids have had GM diesel pickups as well. 6.2 was underpowered, but always lasted for us. Sons 86 Blazer went 400,000 miles without a rebuild and last I knew was still going strong. Yea, I like my diesels, and have always pushed them to the max.

3)Because the 6.6L is better than any 6.2/6.6L I could build. I wanted a manual tranny and to convert a mid 90's Sub W/ a 6.5L to a manual box would be difficult due to the ECM and emisions. (3) previous had 1/2 tons '99Silverado/'01Sierra I always hated towing with them always shifting, springs almost bottomed out, don't come alive until 3000 RPM, sometimes 2nd gear at 70mph on Interstate hills. Hunting trip in WY was the last straw for this wimpy truck! :D . Drove a CC SB PSD and nearly bought it! The salesman was a #*^@ so I left  . Kept driving past a $42K CC SB D/A on my way to work about 10 times past I couldn't take it anymore I had to stop but it was sold. However they had a Green ext sb D/A LT 4x4 on the lot :D . I drove it and fell in love  . Night and day between the PSD and Dmax. Honestly, to me the PSD felt very slugish compared to the Dmax. A friend has a cummins, I don't like it. :( Dad had a couple 2500 Rams, 5.9 gas what a pooch they were (3.55 gears) :( So far this is the best truck I have ever had :D

1.I now drive a 01' CC 3500 D/A 4wd and a 79' Mercedes 300CD

2. Owned a 94' CC K3500 dually 6.5 TD 5 speed. traded with 211,000 miles and still on road

96' same as above but auto. worst truck I've owned, all small or minor stuff but all the time. Worst thing was broken valve spring on number one cyl. but didn't bend valve. Traded with `156,000 on it for my 01.

3. Always owned GM's since 85 but did my own brand survey based on my friend's trucks; here goes; All are diesels and duallys

Dodge: Brad, liked his truck, auto, good turning radius, too high for gooseneck, ate front brakes every 20,000
Jimmy,2wd manual trans, loved motor but put 2 trans in it and one rear in 110,000
Kevin, 4wd auto, terrible sheetmetal, could push top of doors around window out beyond door frame when window open. Told me all kinds of things fell off under dash.

ALL ABOVE SOLD OR TRADED FOR FORDS

Ford; Chuck,99' 4wd auto, likes power of truck but here's the list; 2 trannys, 1 vac pump, 1 turbo and many 02 sensors, all in less than 50,000. Loves my truck.
Carmine, 98' 2wd cc auto, bad trans seal blew trans fluid on exhaust, burn't truck and 4 horse gooseneck with all rigging. Horses and passengers all OK.
Dave, 2wd cc, auto, 3 trans replaced
Kenny, 99' ext cab 4wd f250 1 trans in less than 30,000

With my own experiences with GM I knew most problems were always minor and I felt that the new D-Max would be the way to go. Some guys are very brand loyal and would never drive any thing different {guy with the burn't Ford still drives them} Me, on the other hand, was considering a Ford but figured I wait till the 01's came out and am very glad I did.

4. 15 years experience with diesel

I've been driving an '02 GMC sht bed 4x4 Duramax/Allison since my local dealer had exactly the truck I wanted for 0% last October.
My first diesel was an '82 GMC 6.2L with the 4 speed stick. It had no power but got terrific mileage. I traded it for a '90 Ford 7.3L automatic which has turned into the new GMC.
The '82 spit out 2 injection pumps (GMC paid) and an oil pump in 100k miles. Because I pulled a trailer (only a 19' lite) on local desert (dirt) roads, it also cost me 4 clutches when I had to slip the clutch to keep from getting stuck. The Ford automatic was supposed to cure that, yeah right! That one cost me 4 transmissions by 100k miles (Ford paid for the first 3) to tow a 7500lb 5th wheel. Plus, 4 rear axle seals, and a whole disgusting list of other things in 120k miles.
The early 6.2L injection pumps all died at about 50k miles and all Ford diesels spit out E4OD automatics if you towed a trailer.
After 20 years of diesels, I'm due for a good one!

02 2500HD loaded. This is my first diesel. I knew the new generation of diesels were all good because my son has a 2000 Dodge. I test drove an 02 Dodge diesel, 8.1 2500HD and a DMAX back to back on a 1/2 mile section of winding 8 degree hill. The DMAX was #1 with the 8.1 a close second but decided I couldn't live with the 8.1 gas milage. Later! Lone Eagle

1) Driving a 2002 CC, LB, 4x4, 2500 SLT GMC D-Max.

2)This is my first diesel Truck ever.

3)I previously owned a '89 Ford 460 gasser, Was in the market for a new rig because of the need for a crew cab. At first I was not looking at Diesel Trucks because of the noise and smell. But after reading about the new diesel motor that GM was coming out with, this changed my mind. Was able to get to one of the GM Power Tours and that was all it took.

3) This is my first Diesel, but had a chance to drive a 6.2 Diesel a few years back. At the time I was not impressed. GM has come a long way. In 1978 I bought my first car, a 1961 Chev. Belair two door hard top. I still have this car to this day. Now if GM could put some paint on these trucks that lasts as long as the paint has on my '61.

My current truck is a 2001 2500HD D/A. Last truck was a 1992 Dodge Cummins that ended up with 262,000 miles on it before the body fell apart.

Bought the D/A because of the literature out there supporting that it would be just as "durable" as the Cummins.

1) What diesel pickup or SUV do you drive now?
'02 3500 LT .. see signature

2) Have you owned any other brand of diesel pickup or SUV?
No prior diesel pickup experience. Am a former Peterbuilt driver who had to quit driving and go to work. More years than I want to think about with diesel tractors (mostly John Deere).

3) Why did you buy what you have now?
Getting close to retirement. Wanted to get a truck in time to have it paid for priro to retirement but not so far ahead that it would be worn out by that time. 0% made it possible, otherwise couldn't have afforded payments on a truck in this price range.

4) How many years of experience do you have with diesel light-trucks/SUV's?
As noted in #2, first diesel pickup. First SUV (Jeep CJ5) purchased in 1965, have had one of some variety every since. Most recent '95 Tahoe & '99 Z71.
