My new Dmax cc long bed arrived by rail 3-19-02. Unfortunately, the dealer did not receive it until 3-28-02 and I picked it up the same evening. With only 6 miles on the truck I had to pay someone to transport my 10,200 lb 5th wheel for a 330 mile haul. It was hard work driving up and down the rpm range to break-in the motor as I normally drive very steady. There is now over 1,300 mile on the motor and it runs great. Drove up the Grapevine on I-5. Power is not a problem! It seemed like I did not even have to press the pedal to climb the hill. Can’t wait to haul my trailer home.

First tank of diesel was 17.5 mpg
Second take was a tick over 19mpg.

Thank you all. This is my first experience with a diesel and your shared knowledge has helped me remain confident in my choice. In fact, I found out quickly that I knew more about the Dmax then anyone at the dealership.

Thanks

Philip

How are you getting that kind of mileage? I can't break the 15.2 barrier. For me to get 19 mpg i'd have to push the truck off a cliff!

IndigoDually,
The first 500 miles were driven without too high of RPM. I would run it up to about 65mph then back off down to about 50-55mph. Boring, but good for the engine. The next 500 miles were driven mostly on open country roads in the CA gold county with some mountain driving. Most of the was done with the cruise control on about 59mph. These roads are all patrolled by the CHP and they radar you before you can blink an eye. Of course I had to mash it a few times for fun. Current tank of gas will probably be in the 17.5 range as I was running about 74mph on I-5 coming home.
I am also using Power Service diesel additive purchased at Wallmart.

Konacat,
Congrats on the new truck. I was able to barely push the 19mpg mark on a 375 mile highway trip at about 65-70 from Sacto to LA. That grapevine was nothing of a hill to climb in the dmax :D
Enjoy this site, lots of info and laughs around here ;)

Rilo,
Nice color. as for Sweet...mine might be close ;)

I just got back from a trip to Charlotte from Tampa in my 94 6.5 TD dually. I got some real crappy fuel at Shell in Tampa and barely got 12 mpg empty. The next time I filled up I dropped in some Power Service conditioner and now I won't have anything else. For the first time sense my new engine was installed last Feb. I was able to get 15.56 mpg. I'm sold.

Philip, it is a great feeling isn't it? A "TICK" over 19 mpg?

Congrats on the new truck!

never fear about your mileage, its all over the place, some of us, me included can get over 20 mpg per tank, others can seem to get over 15...diesel difference, driving difference, road difference etc...

I know that with us, I personally get better mileage than John does when he drives... the same roads, same diesel, same truck..

enjoy it!

Brandy :D

Konacat,
Welcome to the Forum. It appears you really like your truck.. :D

I love mine. I experienced similar mileage results and now average 16-16.5 daily driving and 19-21 when driving unloaded going 60-65. I have found the truck gets the best mileage while holding the RPM's around 1800-1900, once you cross 2000, the fuel economy starts diminishing and then over 75 mph, 15-16 is all I can get.

Again, welcome and ENJOY!!!!!

IndigoDually,

Filled the tank last night and was surprised that I got 18.52mpg. I am quite satisfied with the mileage so far. You might do a search for threads on mileage. I have seen threads that have several suggestions on possible reasons for your current mpg numbers (other than a heavy right foot).
Good luck!
