View Full Version : Please help! Squeal is driving me crazy!

I'm in desperate need of help. I have a squeal on the front of my motor. I've replaced tensioner assembly, grooved idler, smooth idler, and now the alternator! (I thought I had it!) It seems to happen when it's damp out, or after a rain. It won't do it if the engine is hot, but if I drive in the rain, the next time I start it it squeals like a pig. I've tried the dealer, they couldn't help. The old alternator worked fine, but with the belt off, if you spun the pulley, it squeaked. Now, it's back to squealing. Any clues? You have no idea how much I would appreciate some insight. Thanks.
Ty

after further searching, found what I might be looking for. Tomorrow, new belt. Please don't be the water pump...

I did the same thing on a F@rd. It was the belt.

Tysmith, Try some spray Permatex belt dressing before buying a new belt. Later! Lone Eagle :D

Get a Goodyear Gatorback belt.... They work the best.

Which alternator do you have?

Or, better yet- what is the GM number on your stock belt?

tysmith,

Just to be clear, is your squeal present with the engine running, or does it happen when you shut the engine off?

SoMnDmax,

Do you know the Gatorback part# for the dual alt serp belt? I'm ruunning belt 97223131 on my '01 with the dual alts. Thanks.

For reference- my belt squeaked at shut down every time, and occasionally when running during high humidity conditions. Also, it'd squack every time the AC compressor would kick in out on the highway. Verrry annoying...

Mittie, not a clue to the conversion number. Check your inbox though.... ;)

4061115 is the proper GY GB belt for an '01 with the 140 amp alternator.

Had cold morning squeal and water pump was bad. Dealer replaced it and still noise. New belt cured the noise.

The squeal is gone. (I hope.) It was happening with the engine running. Today was quite wet here, and it was squealing like mad. CHANGED THE BELT, and it was silent as new. I have the 130 amp alternator, and the bearing in it was pretty well played (it squealed when turned by hand.) I wonder if this could have contributed to the downfall of my belt? Anyway, it's all new now, so hopefully, no worries.

I use the gatorback on all of my cummins' and they are nice belts - stopped the shut-down chirp completely, not that it was overly bothersome. NAPA's best will have to do for the Dmax until I get it a gatorback.

As always, thanks for the help.

Let me do some checking on the belt number for you. I will make a call on Wed and see if they can help me cross them over.

Dual Alt. Both 140 amp?

BigO,

OEM alt is the 105A, and the Aux alt is a 200A powermaster. Serp belt is GM part# 97223131. Thanks.

tysmith,

Sounds like you have the problem solved.

Just for future reference, spend $10.00 and buy you one of those stethoscope like listening devices. They work great!

I had a friend of mine who just knew he had spun a bearing after some hard driving the previous night, he came over for me to listen to the engine, sure enough, it was a deep

Hound:

Give me that OE number and i will check for you. Goodyear had their cross reference incorrect on some OE numbers. THe 01 was originally the 4061112 but they did a fit check and corrected the cross reference. NOw it is the 4061115.

The 4061112 MAY fit with the little (90 amp?) alternator, since it's got a somewhat smaller chassis which may put the pulley lower. Otherwise, the belt is just a red ______ hair too short. smile.gif

The '02s had a revised idler system that may require a different belt.

no go for you. We referenced Gates for your dual alt. application and they show nothing.

BigO,

Thanks for checking, I'll just live with the shut down belt check indicator for a while longer ;)

dmaxalliTech,

Here are the part #s for the 2001 Dmax dual alt install:

REQUIRED GM PART #S:

1) Bracket for left (Driver Side) alternator 97212348
2) Bolt for alt lower ear to cast Al engine mount 11516360 Quantity (1)
3) Bolt for new bracket to cast AL engine mount 94009975
4) Bolt for Alt upper ear to new bracket 94009975
5) Idler pulley 97233352
6) Idler pulley bolt 11515769
7) Belt (may vary w/equipment, w/AC) 97223131
8) ECU terminal -> same terminals, different part #
12084913 QUANTITY 5 terminals
12084912 QUANTITY 10 terminals

The serp belt is different for '02, and I don't recall if the idler pulley is the same or not for '02. A terminal is added to the ECM position C1-32 -> to pin B (BROWN, Charge Indicator Control) on the four position alt connector ('01 and '02).

I do not know if the same ECM connection applies for '03 since I have not seen the manuals for '03.

If you search for 'dual alt' or 'RPO code', you should find plenty to read.

BigO,

I got the 4061115 today and it's too short for the '02 with single alt. The stock part number is 97300653. If you could please cross reference it I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Bump,

I'll post my CQ/ Gates numbers when I get my belt.

John - did you come up with a Gates or Goodyear number that actually fits the 02 single alt? Thanks

Further net search shows Goodyear has a catalog page that does show an application for a 02 single alt (2 different amps - same belt) and for a dual alt belt. Single belt shows a 4061010.

JK - you are way to young to have that problem. Give it 20 to 30 years and then you will understand. Some of us are approaching the age where we leave the house in the AM with no pants, don't notice the breeze, and think everyone is staring because we still have a full head of hair at our age.

I'm senile, blind, deaf, and dumb and the above goodyear number is wrong - I read the wrong line - the correct number shown by the goodyear online catalog for a 2002 w/o VP (what the heck is vp) to be 4061175 and with VP to be 4061182. Crossindexing factory number of 97300653 gives you 4061175 which is 117.5" long. To double check for your vehicle, go online to goodyear automotive belts, automotive belt section, and used the vehicle information button. You can also search by factory part number.

VP is the Vacuum Pump that the Califorinia and north east emissions trucks (The ones with Cats and EGR) use to control the EGR.

A piece of equipment that I'm happy not to have. :D
