I change my oil and filter very 3000 miles almost to the mile. Then today I get the change engine oil message with 2600 miles since the last change. Doesnt the message come on based on viscosity?? Ive been running shell rotella 15w14, maybe I should change oils?
Could it be extended idling?, we have had a few snowstorms where Ive been plowing a lot and have had the truck running for hours on end. I dont know what the heck is going on.

The computer has no way to know viscosity. Maybe you forgot to reset your Oil change meter?

The computer looks at run time, idle time, engine load, temperature, RPM, and maybe a few other things to create a mathmatical brew which determines when the oil should be changed.

Plowing snow will put the engine under harder loads, which when the ECM see's that, it will decrease your life monitor. Also, extended idle time will really shorted the life too.

The ECM cannot calculate for DIRT or broken down oil though.

HTH's a little.
