Duramax came out in 2001 ?

2006 another new engine?

I don;t think I will be buying a used D MAX in the near future,

Probably a used Cummin's

 Huh? Who the heck is Cummin? What belongs to this person? What do they have to do with a Duramax?

The DMAX was a new design in 2001. With any product, the design evolves for many reasons. Some of the design changes have come about due to emissions (as Bill mentions above) and others come about as engineering improvements (usually to lower costs, either manufacturing or warranty repair or to increase performance for competitive reasons). From my perspective, it is a good thing that the manufacture is trying to improve their product.

For the DMAX, I break the product evolution down as follows:

LB7 Fed Emissions 2001-2004.5 Version 1
LB7 Cal Emissions 2002-2004.5 Version 2 (EGR & CAT added)
LLY Fed/Cal Emissions 2004.5-2005 Version 3(New Heads/Injector/EGR/CAT)
LLY Changes - 2006 - Version 4 Changes TBD

With regard to the Cummins, I think you will find a similar evolution, so do some research on TDR. I know the 2002 engine is different than the 2003 and the 2004.5 model is different again.

If you plan on buying a USED Diesel truck, I think it is important to understand what year you are buying, NO MATTER WHAT BRAND YOU ARE BUYING.

The Cummins made major changes in the 98/99...Then some more in 00/01...then major changes again in 03....Then major changes again in 04.5...

I would suspect that this will become the normal routine for auto makers. EPA restrictions, and public demand for more power, better economy and bigger GVWR numbers...changes have to be made.

Cheers

Probably a used Cummin's I think you are trying to say that too many revisions = lack of trust?

I wouldn't be afraid of any of the Dmax's, but would prefer certain model years.

In comparison to Cummins and their changes, let's see:

91(or was that 90?)-93 was one generation with old rotary pumps.

94-98 was another series with inline pump.

98.5-2002 another series (24 valve) and start of electronics(Shop for Edge for these years and you'll find multiple MY specific listings due to wiring changes)

2003-2004 first years of HPCR

2004.5?-2005 "600" designation HPCR (again revised)

You will also find many different turbochargers along the way based on MY and transmission selection.

Dmax runs:

2001-2004 largely unchanged with only a few programming and component location details, but can be covered as one group by mods.

2004.5-2005 are now LLY but saw no significant changes between the two MY listings.

All part of the evolution of a product line and the need to comply with emissions etc...

Thanks John, Your are correct, Was looking for a diesel with the most reliability....

After many 200k plus GM trucks, getting a 6.5 was
quite an education,

I guess the 2004.5 Dmax may be in my price range
next year or so..
