Hello All:

A relatively medium loud tapping/ticking noise has just started that seems to be coming from the area of the vacuume pump on the passenger side. 1997 Sub with 110K miles. There has allways been a ticking sound from this area, but is is now much louder sounding. No effect on power, oil pressure, boost, etc. Could the vacuume pump do this? Timing chain? Any and all help appreciated.
Thank you, Wayne

Wayne,Take the belt off the engine ,start it .
If noise is gone check the vac. pump and crank pully.

Hello David:

Great idea. In the process of taking the belt off to check as you suggested I found that the vacuume pump was grinding badly and had essentially started to disintegrate. The cam and input shaft area were completely broken apart.

I can't believe that the pump was working whatsoever. What does it power, as everything seemed to be working OK?

Thanx, Wayne

Provides a source of vacuum to operate the turbo wastegate through an electric solenoid control.

Turbomaster is a less costly repair, even with the belt off a 93.......

If you take the vac pump off a 93 belt won't fit the 96 and later engines. It should take a 100" belt. The A/C compressor is different and things are located in different positions from the 95 and earlier
