View Full Version : Factory bug screen for grill??

I seen a couple Dmax's w/campers that were part of a rental fleet with a bug screen that looks exactly like the factory winter grill cover. It attaches with the same way but has the middle cut out and has a screen in its place. Anybody seen one? Who has them? I just passed these on the road so I couldn't find out out anything. I guess the grill covers are about $40 bucks. I will have one made if I can't find out where these came from. I was running a Lund SS screen front but with the 25,000lb plus loads I am pulling everyday I need alittle more airflow. This sounds perfect. My Lund is avaliable for those that might be interested. I will pay shipping.

Maverick,
I bought a second winter front for $36 and cut the center out. I bought a piece of screen and sewed it in. It works great and looks factory. I posted this last summer. Here is a picture similar to mine.

Maverick,
Drop me a line about the Lund. I have never seen one, but would like to have something of that nature.
Thanks,

Burner,
I see you have a GMC. The Lund is off my Chevy 3500. Here is a pic of the front. It is the last pic. I don't see an email for you. Shoot me one. Mdrags link is another pic.

Mdrag,
Geesh, that truck looks familiar. It took half an hour to clean just the front. :D

Dang Maverick,
You beat me to it!! Good to see you made it back OK. If you find anything out about this please let me know, I'll do the same. I would be interested in getting one also. I forgot to get the stickers from you yesterday, we'll have to meet up again... I seem to remember rv adventures or something like that which owns the fleet of cabover rentals.
As previously posted:
After getting back from Rendezvous IV, the front
of my truck was covered in bug parts and bug splatter.
With 4 "layers" of fins in the radiator area, it was a
mess and very difficult to clean.
After seeing how Ivan used screening and silver duct
tape to effectively keep the bug debris out of the radiator
area on his GMC.......... I wanted to do the same, but
instead, I put the screening on the inside of the grille.
This was my solution:
1. Take off the top plastic shroud (pop up 7 plastic buttons)
2. Remove grille (turn 5 plastic hold downs and remove one bolt)
3. Take a piece of black bug screen 3.5' x 2' and stretch it
over the 5 plastic pegs on the back of the grille piece. That
holds it taut and snugly in place
4. Cut small openings in the screening where the hold downs are
located.
5. Cut edges of the screening to fit only the interior grille area.
6. Replace the grille, then the shroud.
Total Cost: $1.98 Easy to install.
The bug screen is completely hidden, and when it gets
clogged with bugs, pop off the top plastic shroud and use
air or a water jet to clean it. :D

^... As I was traveling a few weeks back, I glanced at a truck as I passed it (rapidly). As it appreared, he (or she) had a small metal tubular frame (maybe 3/4" dia.) made with a screen front (rounded on the corners). This entire screened frame stood away from the vehicle about 2 - 4" (maybe?) and covered (shielded) the entire front end and (guessing) it would have had to have been mounted in a manner as a front hitch assembly. I didn't bother to slow and look closely, as my first impression was that it looked gay and goofy. However, the more I thought about it on up the road, the more I regret not looking closer. As my impression prevailed, I'd love to have one as a single unit that would mount into a front receiver component. Probably a weekend beta project as soon as the new garage is completed.

NutNButGMC,
There are a lot of full time RV'ers up here with a similar set up. It looks stupid but does the job.
AKDmax,
I dropped my winter front off at Busters Upholstery in Anchorage. $40 bucks and he'll call me next week to pick up. Not a problem to put the screen in. I rarely used my front anyway in the winter. My plow was on 3/4 of the time and I was towing the rest. I'll show you next time I see you.

I am in need of a setup such as Mavericks. Any suggestions on where to purchase?
I don't know the part number for the winter front for the Chevy?
Thank you for the info.

ThumbScott,
I'll get a number on the front for you. Just take the winter front to any reputable tarp, canvas, boat cover repair, or upholstery shop and tell them to cut out the center. Put a nice hem on the inside a sew in a screen. I'll post a pic next week when mine is done.

Thank you for the info.
I have the bug screen/winter cover from Cabelas.Cost about $40.00. The bug screen is inter-changable with a winter cover, they came together as a kit. It attaches with adhesive velcro tabs. It's easy to clean and keeps the bugs out.
The least expensive solution is to buy a roll of fiberglass window screen and cut the desired lenght to go from under the hood and down to the bumper. Attach the top with the existing plastic plugs that hold the winter front tabs on and attach the bottom of the screen to the chrome bumper with quarter sized magets. When the screen gets full/dirty cut another piece. (or wash it)
Thanks for the tip on Cabelas
I just ordered one screen only, no winter cover required in CA :D

6X,
Got a pic of the screen on your truck. Do the stick tabs have to stick to the chrome on the grill? I would like to see one on an HD.
I tried 56nomad's idea about installing window screen in behind the grill and find that it works great. :D
mowser
mowser, I tried 56Nomads idea and it does work great. The one thing I did notice was a 40-50 degree jump in my allison temp. The alli usually runs 130-150 unloaded. After I put the screen in it would run 170 with 20 minutes of driving and it hit 200 when in stop and go traffic on a hot Socal day. I cut out a section just enough to let the trans cooler breath better and now I'm back to the 140's as of yesterday. The GMC emblem on the grill takes up most of the bug splatter from the trans cooler anyway. No noticable change in the engine temp though. Hope this helps you and anyone who is trying this setup. Later
LA DMAX
That should read " magnets"
Maverick,
I have the Cabela's bug/winter cover on the HD. The sticky back tabs attach on the black plastic which surrounds the black grill. Nothing glues onto the chrome bar which crosses the middle of the grill. There is about a 1/4 inch gap between the bottom of the screen and the bottom of the grill, therefore the bug screen attaches across the top, and on the bottom two corners, not on the bottom middle. It has been no problem staying on, and the little gap on the bottom doesn't seem to effect anything. It seems to be tight fitting so far, been on for 3 months.
Sorry I don't have a picture, you might find a picture on Cabela's web page.

^...6X... GET PICTURES!.... No one wants to look in a catalog for the cover. We want pics of yours, NOW!!! :)
Maverick,
Did you get your screen front back yet? I found the company that has them on their fleet of trucks. Called to inquire about getting one, "They are custom made, we don't have them for sale" D***!

I will see if its done tomorrow. Gotta go to Anch. anyway.
NutNbutGMC,
Alright,
I'll see what I can do about pictures. Now I suppose I'll have to wash it!
6X
Here are some pictures, I hope. I haven't done this before so wish me luck.

I have pictures of the Cabela's bug screen which fastens with glue backed snaps, I said earlier that they were velcro, but I was mistaken. The snaps remain if you remove the bug screen, then you can snap in the winter cover. There are also two little flaps which open and close on the front of the winter screen to vary your winter air flow.

Here is the part # for a new Chevy winter front.
15057593
It lists for $49.67
My modified screen front is done. The are pics in the accessories installed on 3500 albumn. It turned out real good. $40 to have the screen put in.
I finally got the grill screen from Cabelas.
I put it on already (10 min job)
looks good. I am kind of worried about the stick on studs, but they are made out of 3M tape so should be sturdy.
Hopefully no more bugs in the radiator.
Hi Mowser,
I just got back from a road trip
and all the bugs got caught in my
home-made my invisible screen!
Maybe we should go into business
together! For less than $2.00 worth
of screen material placed
behind the grille...... can't see it
and can't beat it!
TRX400E..... I noticed no increase
in temps after putting my screen on.
Glad you were able to fix the problem.
A weird day on Hwy 101 near Salinas.
A flat bed carrying empty 1 gallon steel
paint cans lost his load right in front
of me. At least 100 cans came flying
in my direction in the roadway and it
actually was impressive the way my truck
flattened all of them that I could hit!
My brother-in-law driving his D-Max was
right behind me and also tried to hit as
many as he could ;- )
:D :D :D
56Nomad,
I've not seen any increase in temperatures either and the screen does an excellent job of catching the bugs and even the fine poplar tree fluff that we get up here in the spring. For two bucks and less than a half hour of your labour you can't go wrong and the best thing is it looks stock. ;) EXCELLENT IDEA!!!!!!
I had my winter cover converted June 01 for $18 at local canvas shop. I have noticed a slight decrease in A/C efficency, no other temp changes tho.
