I have an Escort brake controller installed on my 2002 HD. For some darn reason it works fine until I turn on the truck lights. Then it acts as if it is getting a small signal from the truck running lights themselves.
I thought everthing was hooked up per the GM supplied harness, but there alwasy seems to be an extra wire. Anyone else notice this.
Any one have any clues. Going to yank it all out in the morning and start again. It pulls and works like a champ during the daylight hours, but when you turn the lights on it is a horse of a different color.

Shooting from te hip here but I think the last wire is a dimmer for illuminated boxes. I would just check your wireing again with the color chart. I cant tell you about the Escort as I do not own one. But the fifth wire is most likely your prob.

I still think I have this thing wired right. Here it is:
Brake control GM Harness
Dark blue ---------- Dark blue
Red ---------- Light blue
Black ---------- Red
White ---------- Black
It acts like a ground thing with the trailer. The buddy that owns the trialer has a ford and says his works great. Going to try a different Ball and see if that is the missing link.

Oh, the illumination "BROWN" wire on the GM side is not wired to anything.

Check to see if the trailer harness is actually grounded the truck looks right. Also check the trailer harness to see if he didnt make up his own plug wireing. Gm is wired industry standard. His truck and trailer may not be.

Sounds like the running lights are crossed with the ground. When the running lights are off the circuit supplies ground and when they are energized( ON ) they are feeding back to the controller.

He had some light problems. One of the bulbs was out on the trailer. I have never seen a blown trailer light casue this problem though. His Ford and my GM are wired the same. Factory plugs......
Usually when you don't have ENOUGH ground and another light or power source is introduced all kinds of crazy things can happen.
I will keep checking.
