View Full Version : Extended Warranties
Now that some of these trucks are out of warranty is there anyone who purchased a warranty other then GM and has used it. I have been looking at some of the warrranties on the internet and wonder if anyone has one. I know the pros and cons of these insurance policys, but the prices of repairing the allison alone scares me. My dealer wants $3050 for a 72 month 100,000 mile waarranty. Aftermarket ones are half the price and say they pay with a major credit card.
Thats a good price on th GM Major Guard (didn't say good deal). GM's are very pricey to say the least. If I was going to buy a third party i'd buy it a dealer just in case if that company went bad you can talk to someone face to face. I know this sounds funny but check out a Chrysler Maximum Care and Ford'd warrany a Chrysler 6/100 $100 deductible should be around $1600-$1700 depending on how many miles you have on your truck. Honda has the lowest warranty price of them all if you want to try that route. Notice how I gave all major manufacturer's names. I've been in the business and have seen too many people buy third party policies to see them go out of business or not cover something. Just my opinion. ;)

^...Extended mine this week. GM Major Guard, dollars 1887, for a 3 year, 100k. I'll hit the 100k mark long before 3 years. I looked into all of the others and what I found was, that the list of items that each did NOT cover, was much longer than the list of items that they did cover. IMHO, from much research, I recommend the GM Major Guard. No hassles, no frills. GM coverage dealing directly with GM, just as the original warranty, covering everything except Mack Daddy's kitchen sink and turbo propeller.
Disclaimer: Just my dollar 0.02 worth.
One difference is my WarrantybyNet allows me to take my Allison to Allison.
Hoot, Warranty by net was one I was looking at. Have you used at your dealer yet? If so was it a smooth transactiion. I like the idea of being able to to the dealer and other repair facilities.
No I haven't used it. Truck is still under full factory warranty for a few thousand miles more. They seem to have a large part of the market and I have never heard or found anything bad about them. I guess I 'd rather not have to use it.

Try 1SourceAutoWarranty.com I bought my 98 with 37,000 miles on it just past the GM warranty run out date, they insured it pretty much bumper to bumper 10yr/100000 for $1820 billed incrimentally to my card no finance charge, no deductable. Allow me to use any service provider including GM.
One of the few aftermarket companies that will deal with a turbo diesel 4x4. I've used them a couple of times so far with good service, they even let me do the work and paid for the parts required, since I still have injection pump and block waranty from GM I don't want their mechanics under the hood to notice the "non standard" mods if it is something I can handle on my own.
I know legally they can't gripe, but I don't want to give them the opportunity to try to exclude coverage.
As for the company being around I checked it's Ins rating it fell in as A+ rated company AM Best insurance rating service, and has been around for about 15 years. I have the Warranty by net on the wifes mini van, have had good service with them. At the time I bought my truck they were not writing policies on TD 4x4s, looking over both policies I have better coverage with the 1 Source plan.

I have a warranty on my 97 Passat that was purchased thru my AAA Membership. Same deal, payment made by credit card. Dealer or private shop.
Having bought it the only thing that has gone on the car is the Bosch Alternator at around 63K miles. It was an $800.00 repair with parts and labor. I paid $50.00 deductable.
IIRC the cost in 1997 was $1200.00.
I just got my final offer from GM today for thier warranty. I have until August 26th to decide.
I will most likely buy something, don't know what yet.

I'm also trying to figure out what to do for ext. warranty. To this day, noone from GM has contacted me to purchase an ext. warranty. Bought my truck in Feb. '02, shouldn't I have heard by now? If I understand correctly, GM warranty isn't really GM? Sounds like some others mentioned here are better? Also, isn't it alot cheaper if I buy now, instead of waiting 3 yrs?
