OK...I want new tires and wheels but cant do both at the same time. I want 285/75/16 with 16x8 rims.

1st - Is that a good combonation?

2nd - Can I put those tires on the stock rims?

3rd - If no to #2 can I put those rims on the stock tires?

And the last one is should I just wait until I can afford them both?

thanks in advance

I was in the same boat that you are in. i bought my tires first, had them mounted on the stock wheels, bought new rims months later. 285's on the stock rims won't wear perfect, but not bad IMHO. I have pictures, check sig. They are eagle 589's and Mickey Thompson radial MTX's. I love the whole package.

Thanks for the advice. They do look good on your truck. Are those 16x8 rims or another size

1. The combination is perfect for your HD.
2. and 3. NO and NO, although you can run 285's on the stock rims but they will balloon over the rim and not wear right. My advice is to wait until you can afford both. I have 295's on 16x8 and love them. Check pics.......

The BFG site recommends an 8" rim for a 285 tire. They will fit, but probably wear unevenly. I've ordered 255/85 tires, which will fit fine on the stock rims and give me a little height and fill up the wheel well. A few guys here have them and I thought they looked really good. 255/85 is 33.2"(?) dia. and an unusual size, but Dunlop Rover RVs(?) do come in that size.

If later you want to go with a different rim/tire, you've got a couple of years to save up. Those PYO rims aren't TOO bad looking for factory wheels.

racerfan#3 maybe you can do what I did. I ended up getting $100 each for my new tires. The guy said up to 1500 miles. I decided (took a chance??) on a less expensive 285/75 16 all terrain tires made by cooper but with a different name (Mastercraft courser AT)I am getting them for $99 each. for $7 more per tire I bought the special road hazard insurance. The wheels I bought were $230.00 Each but on the addvice of some here I have the PYO's all sold for $100.00 plus shipping.
I bought the wheels and tires at Town fair Tire. They include the lifetime rotation and balance plus a 50k mile warranty, plus you get a free front end alignment when you buy any 2 tires from them. I even get a 30 day trial period for the tires. If I do not like them, for $66 more each I can have the BFG's. I also save the extra expense of having to pay to mount the tires twice to different sets of wheels. When you figure it all out I think I am getting a great deal.

*** I was told the same or comperable wheels just polished not chromed could be $100 cheaper each!! So if that is what you wanted you could probable afford it all now!!***

SledZep,

Dont hold your breath waiting for that "free" front end alignment. VERY and I mean VERY few shops have an alignment rack that can take an extended cab pickup, let alone your Crew Cab!

Oh, well. Looks like you have a great deal nontheless.

I had my 1500 Aligned under warrantee at the local tire shop. Fit no problem, a CC would have even fit, or a dually even, don't think a CC Dually would have though. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/wink.gif

Just figured I'd put this here to..

These are great, best traction, wet, snow etc, low noise, agrresive off road but good on the highway tires. I have tried all the rest BFG, Mickey Thompsons etc, these perform the best and are the quietest as well.

DoneRight,

What size are those tires, and did you need to get larger rims than the factory original aluminum?

SoCalDMAX

M34,

Can't you read the numbers in the picture? http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/wink.gif They're 255/85-16 of course. They'll fit VERY nicely on the PYO rims and help fill up those huge fender wells in addition to giving ~3/4" to 1" more ground clearance. I also hope they'll lower my RPMs a little at 75mph for a touch better fuel economy. I've ordered a set of 5 thru Discount tire at $105 ea., but they're on national backorder(they claim) for 6-8 weeks. Based on some other posts here, I decided those were what I wanted. Looks like there's a run on them now!

Oh, yeah - I just had to put on my reading glasses to see that...

Since the Dunlops are back ordered, does anyone know of a nice equivalent in another brand? Also, are you sure that those are the biggest tires for the stock rims? I was told by a local tire outfit that we could go larger...

I've used Dunlops in the past and I have never had much luck with them due to the rubber compound. They tend to dry rot rather quickly (sidewall cracking) Maybe that's just the ones for cars though - I've got Dunlops on my M-roadster, and within a year they were developing cracks. They were like $220 ea. too.

Hey Guys,

I'm working out a deal with a local station to swap (+ boot) my OEM tires. Have no need for a real agressive tread like the Dunlop Rover with 2WD and 99.9% no snow here. What are your suggestions, make & type? Thinking of 255/85/16 on the stock OEM rims.

DSLPOWR,

Looks great, like the fifth wheel too. Did you crank the torsion bars or put a lift on your truck for tire and wheel clearance? I have BFG's in 285-75-16 on the stock wheels, I have read that there may be some rubbing issues with wider wheels. Thanks!

Albee- Thank you, I turned the torsions up to gain an inch or two in the front (and take the rake out) and then I had to trip the air dam and tie back the inner plastic fenderettes to clear the tires. Before I put the mud guards on I could not get them to rub at all, but with the aluminum flaps they do get close. There are a few pics in my album that show how I tied back the fenders with zip ties, maybe that helps. :D
