View Full Version : Goofy Overhead Noise
Enjoying my new Silverado -- moved up from my trusty '95 Dodge Cummins to pull my '29 foot fifth wheel. Still learning -- it only took 15 minutes to find the oil filter; who knew it was painted black and I needed a flashlight to find it? The bones only support only so many trips up and down. One question though: has anyone ever had a flapping sound in the overhead above the headliner? Sounds like the marker light wiring is flapping. Only happens about 70 mph but sounds like mice running around. Is this possible? Not the mice but the wiring flapping? Can figure out how airflow could cause it. Pretty sure it's in the overhead though. Anyone ever seen (heard) this? Thanks -- a old new owner.

Jack,
Are you running a wind diflector? If so the noise is likely coming from the rubber between the hood and the body of the truck. Many have reported this noise and it's cure.

Yup, a Lund Interceptor --- should I pull it to see if it stops?

Not me..the first place I would look is the rubber around the windshield. They have had this problem since the first new body style in 99. You can just run a little urethane or silcone or something unde it and it will stick to the windshield so it won't flap. That would be my guess. I've had to do it to all of mine anyway. To see if that's the problem just put a strip of wide tape over the weatherstripping on each side of the windshield and see if that stops it. Hope this helps..

Here is some more info on this wind noise. (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=004528) smile.gif

Tophog,
You can still use your Lund ... all you need to do is put a strip of 3m double sided tape under the side moulding (available from Wal-Mart or AutoZone). I also have a Lund and after adding the tape, no more noise. smile.gif

Jack,
The other noise maker with a deflector is the rubber flap that covers the hinge plate between the hood and the body. Use some double sided velcro on that to stop it from flapping (small piece at the leading edge, just enough to tie it down at the front) if the other suggestions noted don't work.
Good Luck,
Bob
I have my rubber glued down around the winshield as I did on my last two trucks. Took care of the noise, but I still can't use the deflector because it causes severe vibration with the Lucerix mirrors. Man it looked good too.
Thanks all! I'll play with the suggestions this weekend and let you know. Appreciate the help. Glad to see no question is too "stupid"
The only stupid question is the one that's not asked... smile.gif
