View Full Version : Under-hood light (2003)
I know that this really shouldn't be posted in the "accessories", but GM in their cheapness decided to not include an under-hood light on the 2003 trucks (this was included in the 2001-02, right?).
Does anyone know if the wiring harness is already set up to accept one if I can find one to add? It would be nice in the dark...
If so, does anyone know the part number for the harness & light?

I find that quite insane.
Is there a cutout for the device in the (under) hood pad? Have you checked other 2003's on dealer lots or other wise?
This makes no sense.

Two of the cost cutting measures I've heard of were the lack of under-hood light, and the chrome side stip stopping at the cab (no chrome strip on the bed).
If you see the pics of my truck you'll see that there is no strip on the bed and I just checked under my hood - no wires, no cutout. Just a grounding strap from the hood to the cab.
I take it you have a light on the bottom of your hood?

While looking under the hood of a friends new '03 GMC D/A, I noticed there wasn't a light. I told him I'd swap my light for his steering wheel audio controls ;)

Yep, no more under hood light and no more bed trim. A couple of cost cutting measures to keep the price down and the 2003s are higher in price? Gee I wonder what they would have cost if they would have kept them. Maybe an extra $200 maybe? Saving an extra $200 on a $45,000 truck.
I have an 03 also and noticed it has no light. I thought i was the only one. It looks like it has wires and space for one there just isnt. Is that something i could add? Sems a little funny to me to spend 40+ thousand dollars and not have a freekin light under the hood.

The underhood light on the 99-02 trucks suck ass anyway. They are dim and should be on the other side of the hood.

1991 GMC: typical under hood mounted light and reel out fender mounted underhood light $19,000. 2003 GMC: zero underhood light $39,000. General Motors: priceless.

I noticed that the 2003 GM trucks does not come with under the hood light too. I noticed that when the next town assistant chief came in to show my chief the new truck that he is looking at buying. I opened the hood to see the engine then afterward I saw that there is no light under the hood. That surprised me.

I dont see why you couldnt put a light turned on by a simple pin switch. AND, you will have a better light than these older models. I have to tap mine a few times to turn it on.

Gentlemen~
I think that you will also notice that there is no overhead consol to place your sunglasses, garage door opener etc....like my 2001 Silverado. The jockey box lid between the front seats no longer has a lock for your gun and the box is half the size of the 2001. I don
My 2003 2500HD LT has an overhead console with a cubby-hole for sun glasses etc. smile.gif

Just a note, I took down my hood light and it has some sort of angle dependent switch. I would say mercury, but I could hear the ball or whatever they use clunking back and forth. Impact maintenance when it doesn't come on I guess. It is still better than nothing when you need to check out something quick.

When shopping for the new truck when I poped the hood thats the first thing I noticed since it was getting late in the evening. That cued me to go off on the General   . General motors needs a size 13 boot up there @$$ on some things. The MOST expensive truck is lacking the most, the lil things that count. I optained a light with the hood replacement, and installed it oem style. I used some heavier gauge wire to be able to install a higher wattage bulb, seems to work good, so far so good.
Seriously,
GM needs to have someone from the south thats uses a pickup truck for some serious work to take over. These little panzy pen pushing northern boys don't know how to make a "tough" truck w/ the proper things, they're in it for the money I think. Thank god my Ford Dealer is the same owner as the Chevy dealer. We've been friends for some time and I receive some good deals.
Anyone wanna see a 2003 02' styled 3500 Chevy SRW? hehe
Another thing about the side moulding, I don't like the new, plus it isn't on the bed. Im stumped now, whether to get the 02' GMC silver molding or the 02' Chevy molding. Whats ur opion guys? Part numbers would be appreciated.
