I am interested in experience and/or comments about the uasge of leveling cogs to elevate the front of my truck by the torsion bars. The product I am looking at are those provided by Off Road Unlimtied. The local suspension person that I was going to have install them recommended against there use due to deterioration of ride quality. I am trying to obtain clearance for 265/75/16 or 285/75/16 on 16X8 rims on a 2002 K2500HD.

First of all, welcome to the best board on the net!

Second, you don't need new torsion bar keys to level your truck or clear the tires you mentioned. Just takes a few cranks on the adjusters and an alignment afterwards. I just leveled mine this weekend and put the H2 wheels on with 315/70/17 tires and they clear very nicely. Truck looks awesome with the new sneakers and noticed very little difference in ride quality. Just do search on leveling the front end and you will find a wealth of info.

Accrash,

How many turns on the Torsion Bars did it take to get clearance? Also how much lift did you gain over the 245 tires? Any changes in handling with the new shoes?

Thanks,

Jack

I went with 285/75's on my 2500HD.

Really didnt have a clearence problem but did touch the inside just a slight bit on a locked left turn at slow speed.

So I cranked them both up 3 full turns. Did not hurt the ride and brought the front up about 1 inch.

See "My Pictures" below on my sig to see what the truck looks like with this combo.

I fit 265's on the factory rims with no issues. Heck they are what comes stock on the 1/2 ton z71's

I believe 255 85 16's(I hink thats right, too many #'s for me to remember  ) are close to the same hight as a 285 but a bit narrower. I will definatly be looking into them for my next set of shoes since my clearance now is more than adequate.

I had no need to crank my t bars BTW.

Dont get crazy with the cranking though. 1.5"-2" is the max you really want to go.

Jack

I had to crank the t-bars quite a bit. 7 turns ps and 9 turns ds. This brought the front up a full 2" and still 3/8" lower than the rear. Overall, with the new tires, the front came up about 4 1/2" and the back came up about 2 1/2". Truck sits level and looks awesome. My wife even commented on how it looks like a truck should. As for handling, I noticed the steering is just a tad stiffer, but, I see that as a good thing. It actually feels like I have more control over the truck now. I get a lot better feel for the road now. I am very happy with this setup to say the least.

7 turns each side for me, leveled the truck nicely!

Minus two turns for me once I installed the Green Keys. My truck rides better and the keys are inexpensive. I installed 285's on 16 by eight inch rims with a 5 1/4 backspace. People aren't mentioning it, but the backspace plays a critical roll in this. Also 285's on 6 1/2 inch rims is a definate no, just as 285's on a 10 in rim is a no.

Is there a place on-line you can order those Green keys? Are they easy to install and do you need an alignment when your done? Thanks Neal

Try here. They have the keys for what looks to be about the same price as the dealers.

Thanks for posting that link. Have any of you had your truck reprogrammed for the larger tires? The 1st dealer I talked to said not change tire sizes and they have had some driveability problems,I think it was ABS related. Second dealer reprogrammed it and said I could go up 3 more sizes if I wanted to. That was about 10,000 miles ago and no problems so far.

I have a Hypertech laying around just for reprogramming the speedo. Works well and I got it real cheap. I didn't try their power programming yet as I already have the HOT JUICE installed.
