Can someone explain to me why I would need (not want but need) a boost guage?

I have the tranny temp in the instrument panel and if the trans get too hot I can stop to let it cool down. I am going to get a EGT guage so I can tell if the EGT's are getting too high. So I can understand the benefit of these guages and can react to what they're telling me. But I really can't see what benefit having a boost guage would provide.

Helps in diagnosing of problems. If you normally pull 20 PSI in a certain situation and all of a sudden your only getting 15 PSI it gives you a starting place to work to find a problem.

Well I um, uh, ah see if, um uh.... hmmmmm....

OK, I once read that one of our members used to drive by the boost gauge on the fwy. He found a sweet spot that the engine was most efficient at by watching the boost gauge. Economy suffered if he drove above or below that speed. It makes sense to me. I also agree with the posts above.

But then mine was built into the EGT gauge, and I just think it looks cool... ;)

If this is to explain to the Boss why you need a boost gauge, just blame us! "Because all of the other guys have them!"

Regards, Steve

Nah, the boss is OK with it. Her point is ...whatever I need for the truck; do it. I just wanted to know if I needed it.

I'm putting in the Pyro so I can tell when the turbo gets down to 300 dgrees so I can shut it down.

The 6.5L TD's have a wastegate controller that sends vacuum to an actuator that controls turbo boost. These things go on the fritz in the heat often. If you felt a loss of power and more smoke, the boost gauge would give confirmation that something was amiss. (Could also be the vacuum pump.)

I don't think I've seen a post by anybody with a boost problem in a Duramax yet, but it would be valuable especially if you had an intermitten problem.

Hey Johns,
I think I passed you in Long Valley at the light a week or so ago. I was pulling a 4 horse trailer.
