View Full Version : Hide-a-way Strobes
Those of you with the hide away strobes, could you post some pics of where u drilled the holes to install the lights? Also I am getting a Whelen hide a way kit, what type of switches should I buy? Thanks in advance. Don
Well, it looks like no one replied to my question about installing hide-a-flash strobe tube on the corner amber marker lens in the front, so I assume that none of you have done this before. I can find out for myself but I need to know how to take this len (DRL, turn signal lamp and corner marker lamp) out of the front so I can see the corner marker len better and to see if there is enough room for strobe tube. How do I do this?
dontxs, why bother getting Whelen brand hide-a-flash strobes? They are like $75 a pair in Galls catalog and I could get a pair for $30 by a different manufacturer which is Nova. I have been using their products for years and never have a problem with it. They are basically the same, just the brand that is different.

As for the switches, you just basically need a SPST switch. One switch for each pair(s) that you want to runs.

Don, Hopefully today I'll get a chance to take a few pics and post them for You. I driller 1 light in each turn signal in front and drilled 2 in the tail lights(1 in red and 1 in amber).
Sorry about the delay, been busy with 9 week old.(daughter not truck)

Please enlighten me. What are hide-a-way strobes used for?

The strobes in my front marker lights are blue because I am a Fireman. The strobes I have in the rear are independently switched and I use them when plowing snow since the truck is so long a car coming down the road may not see the lightbar on the roof unless the truck was blocking the whole road.

Having just done this to fix some damage, it is pretty easy. First step is to remove the plastic plugs from the plastic cover. Open the hood, and that expanse of plastic that covers the space over the radiator is held on by those plastic plugs. Use a screwdriver and gently pry up, then use your fingers to remove them. Once that plastic cover is removed, there is a 10mm bolt in the center holding the grill on. Remove that. Using a screwdriver gently press in the clips at the ends of the grill and pull outwards slightly. Then there are four half turn screws that hold the grill to the mounting points. Loosen them and you'll have the grill in your hands. After that is removed, the side markers lamp removal should be pretty easy. Just a press in clip and it will slide out. It actually takes longer to read and write these instructions than it takes to actually get it done. smile.gif

wmnx6,
In order to take the side marker lenses out you do not have to take off the grille and radiator cover. All you have to do is pull out the two pins that hold the headlamp, pull out the headlamp, then reach inside the headlight hole and release the tab on the outer edge of the side marker lense. It will then pop out. Under a 2 minute job.
On the back of the side marker lenses there are flat spots will small holes made into the back of the lenses, supposedly make for installing strobes.

Where exactly is the two pins? I looked all around the headlamp from outside and could not see any two pins.

there in from the top. they are L shaped turn them toward the front and pull up.
That answered my question that I was wondering about. I saw a couple of "L" shaped solid rod on the top but did not think them as the "pin". Thanks.

I bored a hole with a hole saw bit centered in the flat spots Duckhunter is referring to.

Today it took me a couple of minutes to take the lens out without a problem. I looked at the corner amber lens and it appears that it is too small for strobe tube so the only option left for me is to install amber strobe in the signal lens. I saw a blue round shape right next to the socket for the turn signal lamp, and a grey course round shape. Which one of those did you drilled through for hide-a-flash strobes? Thanks.

It just depends on where you want the strobes located. Either hole will work. One leads to the DRL part of the lense and one leads to the turn signal part. Personally, I would put it in the DRL part because if moisture accidentily gets in I would rather blow my DRLs than my turn signals.

There wasn't enough room in the DRL area to fit the bulbs I am using. They are in a rubber plug that seals the hole better than the turn signal socket does.

dontx,

I snapped a few pics of my bulbs installed in the lenses. Look under "strobes" in my picturetrail.

The pics looks good to me. This is similar to where I am planning on installing hide-a-flash strobes. On the front turn signal len, it looks like you drilled a hole dead center where the blue round sticker is? The reason I asked is because the back part of the len (grey molding) looks just a bit different than mine. What I meant by that is that I don't see a round grey coarse circle on the back of molding on like mine, and there is no arrow symbol on the back of molding on mine.
