KISMIF, I installed hitch mounted one last month. Haven't really used it in totally darkness yet. I do think it will offer some light for backing. It also can be turned on to allow work/play at rear of truck. It helps when backing into my dark shop.

The Whitenight looks like a very nice unit! I have a light fixture that I have been planning to mount on the back of the truck but the Whitenight unit looks like a much better way to go.

Bob,
The write up in the link above says,

"This unit requires 3/4" of clearance between the top of the hitch receiver tube and the bottom of the bumper for installation".
And,
"Some of the factory installed hitches will require the use of an installation kit to relocate the trailer wiring plug"

Did you have to do anything special to mount yours? Does it fit over the existing hitch without having to relocate the trailer plug? Also does the unit use a relay to isolate the power for the added lights from the OEM wiring?

On Edit, Here is a link to the White Night Website. (http://www.whitenight.com/whitenight/mainFrameset-1.htm) Looks like their setup does not use a relay so the two 55W bulbs would pull an additional 9 amps from the OEM wiring. Seems like it would be best to wire this into the trailer circuit.

jbplock, the unit will install on the factory hitch with no problem. I did have to file out the opening in the back plate ,I think, so the receiver hole would align with the light housing opening. About 1/8" if I recall. You will need the trailer plug relocator plate ($9). It relocates the plug to the left to allow it's use with the light assy installed. I did not like the wiring much. Thought I would wire into the trailer receptcale but found that it could not be done. Had to splice into the individual wires. The unit does have a relay behind the light assys.Good luck

Bob,

Thanks for the installation details! I'm also glad to hear there is a relay.
