View Full Version : Neobe Strobes
I just installed 4 Tomar Neobe strobes (Xmas present) and was wondering if anyone else has tried the Neobe brand? My buddy has Whelen ones in his Dodge and the Neobe, while clear, appear a bit bluish when compared to my headlights. I mounted the fronts in the DRL location (hated the DRL's anyways) and mounted the rears in my reverse lights (bulbs in both location were removed).
Has anyone had any problem with heat from the bulbs cooking the lenses? these Neobe bulbs do get warm, but i mounted them in the center of the lens using the original bulb's location. The power supply is rated at 65 Watts if that helps any.
Does anyone know where i can find CA laws governing the use of strobes?
Thanks and have a safe new years!

I have Whelens mounted in the brake and the turn signal in the rear and have had no lens melting problems. Even after being on for 6-8 hrs straight with a 90 watt power supply.

I spoke with two different CHP officers and both told me that it is not allowed and I would be cited. The problem is neither could show it to me in written form, just their option. It would be left up to the judge to sort out.
Since you live in the Sacramento area, maybe you can place a phone call to the to the CHP Commercial Enforcement office in Sacramento. Every CHP officer that I
California has regulatioms that prohibit modifying O E lighting on motor vehicles, & yes the Commercial Enforcement Section in Sacramento is where the "experts"are located.

I have Federal Signal Strobes in my truck and have not had any problems with them yet....been in there a year.....I only maybe use them once or twice a week.....and they are on for only a little while.....I have them in each of the front headlights and in the turn signals in the rear....looks kinda neat.....dmaxster
Ndamico, the phone number to the South Sacramento area CHP office is (916) 681-2300. Ask to speak to a T.O. If they do not answer your questions to your satifaction ask for the Commercial Enforcement phone number. This will be (Valley division). If you don't call early in the morning the folks with any knowlege will be out in the field. I go back to work on Tuesday..I'll look it up for you then if you wish..or you can look it up yourself @ ca.gov.org look for the CVC. (California Vehicle Code.) This will more than keep you busy until Tuesday...May I ask why you need the strobes?? Good Luck!

ndamico, I did some checking in the CVC. I don't think you are going to like the results...CVC 25250 Flashing lights prohibited, exemptions listed...(none listed for private vehicles).CVC 25252 Authorized emergency vehicle, with red lamps and siren is permitted. CVC 25252.5 Flashing headlamps permitted only(1) during emergency call or when in pursuit (2) when red warning light displayed and siren is sounded. Back up lamps CVC 24606(c) shall not be lighted except when the vehicle is in reverse or in conjunction with a lighting system which activates the lights for a temporary period after the ignition is turned off...I looked at several different options for a private vehicle..since I don't know your reason for using these lights I can't be of more help..If you are using the lights to herd livestock on a roadway you might get away with it CVC 25270.5 (but not the back up lights)...I hope that this has been some help to you. You need to talk to CHP to get the most information. They use the CVC much more than I do. If you want to look up anything in the CVC you can buy one at DMV, or go to the library, or go to Yahoo search engine and type California Vehicle Code. A book is much better though. Good luck!
Thanks for your replies. I bought the strobes for 2 reasons. One is because i have a white truck which sometimes parks in snow and i live in california which is the state with the smartest of drivers (DP Members excluded) :D and 2, because i like to run them when i'm out on the sand dunes or other non-highway use. My main reason for wondering about the legality is that i would like to turn them on if i had my truck parked on the road during heavy fog, which we get here sometimes in the winter but wouldn't want to get a ticket for it!
Thanks again for all the help!
