Need info and suggestions.

I have been reading the archives trying to determine what I need.

Its time to replace my tires. I want to go with the largest that will allow me to have the dealer update the comp so the ABS and speedo will be accurate. I also want to keep the height down so it will fit in the garage(garage height is 82").
I believe the largest would be 265's that the computer can adjust for. COrrect?

I see where the 285's are really popular and see several folks that have gone to 17 x7 or bigger rims.

What rim and tire size will accomplish this?

The dealer cannot/will not program the computer for different size tires - to get the speedo to read correctly. The aftermarket programmers (http://www.thedieselpage.com/reviews/programmers.htm) can do this.

Be careful GM will void your warrantly if you use bigger tires. Charlie..

We've discussed this issue here many times, but the short version is that yes, there are at least 51 different tire size selections in the vehicle computer. Unfortunately, selecting another tire size using a Tech II scan tool doesn't correct the speedo/odo - just the ABS.

While I expect GM's position on tire size will change eventually, as of right now, the anal dealers can deny drivetrain warranty service on 2500HD trucks equipped with any tire size other than 245/75R16.

It states if a customer has a powertrain complaint, the dealer is to not investigate the issue if the vehicle has tires installed other than OEM size. It doesn't specify they will void a warranty, only they will not investigate a complaint. Many dealers, if they acknowledge the bulletin (many don't), will normally tell you to return with the correct tires installed before proceeding.

Thanks for the info. I have searched several times and found some references to whell size and associated things.

I will call my dealer and see what the deal is with them locally. I hate to muck up the works with warranty. I was hoping the 265's wouldn't be an issue.

I put 265/75-16's on mine, the shifting was harder so the dealer reprogrammed my computer. I was waiting for them to say something about the different size tires voiding the warranty but they didn't. If they did I was ready to ask how they were going to honor the factory warranty on the used D/A in their lot with 285's on it. The sticker on the window listed the tires as 285's and the remainder of the factory warranty still in effect.

I have just upgraded my 2003 2500HD with 265x75x16 tires and have not noticed any effects. With winter coming on, I guess I will see if the ABS is effected during slippery roads. - Tim
