I've "Searched" and reviewed old posts going back to late last year for the topic of rear sway bar. A few of you were considering installing one but I don't find any comments after installation.

So has anyone installed a rear sway bar on your 2500HD? If so, what brand and what improvements do you see.

I tow a travel trailer and would like to improve my ride and control as much as possible. I have Rancho RS9000 shocks and they do a fine job. But I can't help but think that a rear sway bar could add some additional control.

I installed a Helwig sway bar front and back and think it helps the handling especially around turns, in other words the truck 'tracks" better with no over or under steer. I don't like the design of the rear sway bar cause it has to many parts also it doesnt fit well because of my Magnflow exhaust--in fact one of these days I have to move it over a little 'cause it touches the exhaust when I go off road (to the county dump).

Oops! I see clarification is required.

I'm referring to installing a rear sway bar under the rear of the truck.....not a trailer sway bar used for reducing back and forth sway of the travel trailer.

Sorry, my bad!!

I went with the Hellwig rear swaybar. But I never installed it. IMO, way tooooooo many parts and it doesnt seem to be designed very well. That my .02.

FrankA and ThePend,

You both mentioned the Hellwig bar had too many parts. I installed a Hellwig bar on my prior truck, a Tundra, and it had the bar, brackets and rubber bushings that attached the bar to the rear housing, then two end brackets, two long bolts, metal tubes to go around the bolts, washers, flat rubber bushings and a few nuts and bolts to hold it all together.

Are you talking about more parts than that???

RVGuy::

You say you mounted a Helwig rear sway on a Tundra. What was major use of the truck and how did the sway bar respond?

tks

I put a sway bar on my 2500HD in about an hour. The only problem I had is the left lower shock bolt would touch the sway bar, 2 min with a hack saw solved the problem. I haul a 9.5' camper with a slide out. I have driven the truck with and without and Ill take with. The sway is down by I would guess by 30%. I also did a set of air bags, they took away about 30%-40% of the remaining sway. Next Ill install a set of aftermarket shocks.

RVGuy. If you click on my updated picture url below you'll find a picture that Hellwig sent me as an intallation picture. (in otherwords what its suppose to look like when it done). As I said before there are way too many parts and seems like it wouldnt hold together went put to any type of heavy duty use.

You have:
2 brackets that attach to the frame
2 bracket acting as the upper link attachment point.
2 pieces that bolt together for the link
1 lower link bracket
1 u bolt to mount the swaybar bracket to the diff
1 swaybar to diff bracket
and all of the various nuts and bolts needed to make this work

Then all of this is repeated for the other side.

1 swaybar

Im not knocking Hellwig as a Sway bar manufacter, but I am knocking their mounting hardware.

My .02. Sorry for the long post

If you guys want a good anti-sway bar setup that will work, go to GM. The chassis cabs have them and they are stout. I am thinking about getting one, if I do that is where I'll get mine.

WangoTango,

The application that compelled me to install a rear sway on my Tundra is the same as here...towing a 7,000+ lb. travel trailer.

But after installing it on the Tundra, I noticed the truck cornered allot better, flatter and felt more stable footed.

I notice the 2500HD could use some help in the corners too. I know this truck weighs much more than the Tundra. But what the heck?? I'm slowly running out of practical mods for the truck. :D :D

Buck,

I'm lost on your comment regarding "chassis cab". Help me understand where I can go to see/get this sway bar you refer to???

Thanks for the comments and information,

Great tip on the fact that GM makes a sway bar!

A chassis cab is a truck chassis with only the cab, no bed. This way you can add your own flatbed, utility bed, etc. They often come with cool stuff that we don't see on option sheets.

Sooty had a rear anti-sway bar installed on his truck. The bar is made by Quickor Suspension. It took a couple of trys to get it to fit with air bags. The bar ends face foward and are dog legged. He said it helped a little, but he was looking for more. I wonder if this bar that GM makes will fit with air bags?
